hey guys... I had a question... can someone please post a picture of exactly where you poke the bull reds to relieve the air that has built up in their bladder... last time I tried I never found the exact spot and ended up just having to keep the fish.. maybe show me a picture of where to puncture. Thanks guys! Been a long time lurker and finally joined up on the forum.

I have never punctured one. I only catch them in the surf or the laguna.

Never popped a redfish, but on snapper I usually go about 1-2 inches back from the base of the pectoral fin.

when people say 1-2" back from pectoral fin... is that with the fin laying down flat on the fishes side... or if you lift then fin up and go back from where it's connected to the fish? Thanks guys just tired of having to keep reds... im not catching them in saltwater just so yall know im not keeping more than my 1 bull a year, just figured you guys could be of some help. Thanks

Look in the TP&W booklet that is given out free with your fishing license and there is a picture and discussion on how to deflate the air bladder.

i've only ever seen a picture of a red snapper and how to deflate them.. and even then ive only seen if the bladder is protruding out of the mouth...?

Overinflated air bladders are generally from barotrauma, coming up from depths too fast for them to deflate their air bladders on their own. I never had that problem with any fish other than snapper/grouper/seabass/other deep sea species. If you don't mind me asking, where are you catching redfish that they need their swim bladders popped? If you are having a problem with fish dying before release, maybe they just need to be moved around in the water more to get water over their gills before releasing.

yes Calaveras Lake... It doesn't matter how much you move a red around in the water... as long as their air bladder is filled they will float belly up! Im not talking about a little 25" or anything.. usually this only happens with fish 15lb's and up...Sometimes they will swim down for just a second then float up... I've read alot of reports of people popping them after they catch them on the jetties so I figured maybe someone here would know.. THanks guys!

Even though this video is about a commercial deflating syringe used in this video, you will see the approximate spot you need to puncture. I too have had even undersized reds come in with distended bladders fishing from the banks at Calaveras.

oh man awesome find there!!! that looks like 1-2 inches from the fin with the fin lying down... i got it now! i had tried alot closer to the fin more "under" the fin with the fin sticking up.. Thanks again for the video man!
