Anybody have tips on how to best set some regular ol' PVC (no metal spikes or re-bar) surf spikes in the sand? I can get mine only so far in the sand, and 80 percent of the time, the darn things fall down at least a few times throughout the day. Evil or Very Mad

Put them in wet sand at the waterline. Then suck em down with your mouth. Works pretty much anywhere there are no big shells.

Glad you said it so I wouldn't have to. That's the way I do it. A rubber mallet works ok too. Make sure and set them at a slight angle away from the surf.

Like seastone said, unless you are in little shell or big shell, the suction pile driving thing works like a champ. I know it sounds silly, but try it (won't work if you have holes in your pvc though, obviously).

If the tide is coming in, you need to keep moving the pvc back.

In the rough stuff, the suction method doesnt work very well. You gotta just keep wiggling and twisting it in there, or use a sharp shooter shovel.

Those ghost shrimp pumps can also be used to make a hole to stick the pvc rod holder in.

What topdog15 said. What I also do with my PVC holder is get a black rubber connector at HD or Lowe's and attach it to the top of the holder. It does 2 things. One, it makes it easier to suck on the end, and two, your rod now rubs on something pliable causing less damage to your rod handles. I would add a pic but I have my holders in my truck which is in the shop.

We use a metal T-post driver to push the PVC into the sand. Works great.

I cut pvc at a very sharp angle (like 20-30 degree) and always bring a sledgehammer. I drive the pvc into the sand 12-18 inches. Never had one tip over, even when the tide has come up way past the pvc.

Make a plunger that fits into the pvc like they make for ghost shrimp catchers. Use that to suck them into the sand. I have spent a few days down the beach and with a very active tide and lots of repositioning of my pvc's. I have unknowingly returned home with a nice red hickey all around my mouth from sucking pvc's. OK you can laugh now.

Malarkey!!! Razz There are no hammers or suckers in this equation.

With your back to the surf, stick the pointy end of a 4-foot PVC rod holder in the wet sand. Keeping the top of the holder dipped towards the dunes at about a 15- to 30-degree angle, push down and rock that top back and forth in a slow, 2-foot arc initially. As the holder sinks, the arc will get steadily smaller and swifter. When you stop making progress side-to-side and downward, you should have at least a foot of the holder buried.

The reason you may be having trouble getting the holders to stay put is that you haven't angled them towards the dunes. We call those pointed straight up or towards the water "rod launchers." Laughing

I have a horizontal hole drilled in mine that I put a 1" piece of PVC pipe into. I use the cross pipe to twist it back and forth to drive it into the sand.

It is a trick I learned from Hardhead several years ago. He totally fell off of the radar.

Tennis ball on a piece of all-thread, squeezed between two galvanized washers. Work it like a plunger and it pulls it right down.
