Last weekend I was tasked with calling turkeys in for a couple of guys at a ranch in Refugio. I was assured by the landowner that a couple of mountan lions roamed near the creek (turkey roost). The turkeys knew that cats were afoot, and they wouldn't let out so much as a peep. I tried my best and got nada. At one point I was sitting, trying to locate the birds near the creek by calling when I heard very soft footfalls approaching slowly from behind me. Shocked Being the coward I am, I turned to look, but the creeper was obscured in the brush. I decided there might be birds in another area and left. There was a total of one silent jake taken, and that's not good.

Well it finally played out like it's supposed to today. I located three gobblers on our property before sunrise and called the leader in to 10 yards, but while he was putting the moves on my decoy I screwed up. While preparing for the shot, a tiny puff of air inadvertantly crossed over the reeds of my mouth call. The barely perceptible squeak was enough to makie the big gobbler turn his attention from the hot little decoy and turn to stare at the pop-up. He moved behind the blind and proceeded to spit and drum for 10 minutes, daring my decoy to come out back for some fun. He finally left for greener pastures, and I tried calling in the other two gobblers I saw earlier, but they were henned up and would not play with me. I moved with my hunter to several other locations, and once I called in a whole posse of hens right into his lap, but no toms showed to eat a load of #5. We tried setting up and calling all over the property, and as we were getting ready to call it a morning at 10:00, we heard a distant gobble. My two morning birds were coming back, having been dismissed by their hens. I called, they answered, and it was on! We ducked into the pop-up and within five minutes they were right in front of us. This one received the Pb facial treatment at 30 yards, and it worked wonders for his roaming attitude. Well, he promptly layed down to take a dirt nap and his "best friend" started dancing on his back, spurring him and trying to mate with him (it's a turkey thing, I don't get it, but as a precaution I will do my best not to fall down when out with friends Surprised ). I was offered the chance to shoot the second tom, but evidently not all shotguns pattern like mine, and I shot right over his head using the borrowed shotgun. Oh well, I will get mine with an arrow later. My hunter got a turkey (on his birthday no less) and I am vindicated. I can still mess with turkeys' heads.

Nice report Prof. My buddy called last Tuesday and said their place was overrun with turkeys in Swinney Switch and I should come out the following day. I proceeded to spend the next two days in bed with the flu.
