Hey y'all! I got the chance to go up to Lake Fork this weekend and just wanted to see if anybody has any pointers on what I should look for this time of year and what I might use to catch the hogs! We will have a boat but really no previous experience with this lake. I have heard that the tree stumps are a great to fish but you have to be careful when you are on step with the boat because of their abundance. Can anyone confirm? I know that the largemouth are starting to move in close to start their spawn but are their any other particular places to look? Thanks,

Zak, good luck on your trip.

That is one lake I have not been to and I live in the DFW metroplex. It has a great history. Pre or spawn fishing can lead to the heaviest fish.

I have fished there years ago. Stump central, they are everywhere. I think it is a catch and release lake only. Have fun and get you some waterdogs live bait.

My wife and I stayed on Fork after we retired from '96 till '10. We had an annual RV space at Axtons. This time of year can be tuff if the weather is messed up. Water dogs can get your arm yanked out of socket on that old lake. My old go to bait for that lake is a 10 in. black power worm, or one in red shad. Also keep a rod with a watermellon/fleck super fluke. In shallow water I fish 'em with no weight rigged weedless with a wide gap 3/0 Gamagatsu. It will sink very slow and can get some heart stopping strikes...

Be carefull on that lake it is a flooded forest. If not sure where you are go slow. The boat lanes are easy to see if the water is still low. Since the rain has started to bring most lakes up in that part of the state you can be sure that floaters will be out. Old timber that has been down and had a chance to dry out will float just under the surface for the most part and as wind changes move them arround you never know where they will wind up. If you run across one while running fast it can be a wild ride. One of the guides I knew up there hit one at nite running fast and it tore the motor off the transom. Well, thank y'all for the replies but this trip will have to wait. Plans werent made enough in advance and I got an offer to stay in Galveston with a friend of mine for a week. There is a pier where we are staying so it should be a good trip. Hopefully we can slip away from the tourist crouds and try finding something a little "fishier".

My aunt an uncle have a place at Steamboat Shores on the lake. Back in '88 we pulled 3 bodies out in the middle of the night. 1 boat hit a floater and launched on top of another. 5 people died in all. Tragic. Boat safe. Go slow if you don't know. Wear your PFD.

Sailbad that makes the hair on my neck get all prickly. The summer we moved into the motorhouse and parked at Axtons there was a bad one under that 2946 bridge. An 'ol boy who should have known better tried to cut under the bridge, he missjudged the angle and smacked a pileing. I was outside and heard the crunch, before I could do anything the screaming started........ The driver was killed instantly, his two friends were thrown and one of them drowned, the other was the only one to live. That old lake takes someone every year. One weekend in the spring an older man crappie fishing under that bridge dissapeared. Turned out he was standing up running the trolling motor when a bass boat came by and went under the bridge running on the pad. His wake bounced the fishermans boat up and he broke his neck on the bridge structure and fell in........ no one noticed. No pfd and the boat drifted away and the body didn't get found for a day or so. Ya never know.

My last trip up there a young boy got killed by lightning while fishing with his dad. Storm blew up very quick with lead lightning. We were with a guide who went 75mph plus back to the dock and we barely got in before the storm hit. Within 15 minutes we see a boat with a man waving his arms near the ramp. It was very sad. Several folks gave mouth to mouth until rescue got there. The man had a brand new boat and apparently this was their first trip. This was years ago.

We fished two days that trip. I caught 25 bass over 5lbs and 2 close to 10. Lost count of the total amount of fish caught but it was allot. June fishing with deep divers and worms.

It can be a trecherous lake. But the good news is the bass are HUGE! and so are the SLABS! I've filled my belly fulle of fried crappie from there. I used to fish under the bridge with a coleman lantern as company all night. I met quite a few pretty girls around that lake too!

Now all of this is mentioned, I am glad were not going there. Haha I think with the front moving through, and the warm weather next week, the bite where I am going at Galveston should be decent. Any tips on places to fish without a boat there?

Stay away from San Luis Pass. There have been a lot of drownings there in the past.....just staying in the spirit of the thread.
