Hello all,
just moved to corpus and looking for a place to take my kids fishing oldest is 6. Any recommendations on location and bait selection? tried the packery channel last Sunday with fish bites but no luck. Kids had a great time but i really want them to catch some thing. I'm new to Texas and salt water fishing so any advice would be great.
Thank you.. |

Welcome! You could try a pier on the Laguna like Marker 37. Don't go when It is night if you have young children though as it can be unsafe(I know, I am stating the obvious). Also, I love to fish gulp shrimp on a 1/8 jig head. You can catch almost anything on those. Hope this helps and good luck!

| Xs 2 on the welcome. The gulf coast is indeed a great place for children of all ages. If yours are youngesters I suggest perch fishin'. It's very inexpensive and just about always a real blast for the whole family. A cane pole or a childs rod-n-reel, a cork, a split-shot, a perch hook and a piece of dead shrimp will keep them busy for hours. The jettys by the Lexington at North Beach, anywhere along Shoreline, any of the "T"-heads, or just about any pier. Try it ! you'll like it !!! |

What Popp said! My earliest memories as a kid were catching perch (and bluegill in fresh water) and I couldn't get enough of it.
My friends with young children have a blast with it...easy, cheap, and fun
Every now and again, something other than a perch will put that zebco to the test Gotta love the salt! _________________ I'd rather be fishing |

What is a perch in the coastal bend? How big or small by average? Are they good to eat? Are they around jetties? Thanks. _________________ It is far better to light one little candle than curse at all the darkness. |

| They are considered a bait fish here. They are pretty much everywhere and are expert bait stealers. Most of the time they are about palm size. Occasionally you might get a really large one that pushes 10 inches or so. Fun to catch for kids. |

I'd say the surest way to catch something (anything!) would be dead shrimp or squid in the surf. If you don't have a whiting or a hard head in less than 2 minutes on the line I'd be surprised. Use a towel to handle the hard heads and avoid getting stuck with the "spines". Take the hook out with needle nose pliers. If its' too far down just cut the leader and return the fish to the sea. Whiting are good eats and will give you practice filleting fish. Search Youtube for how to fillet a fish. Buy pre-made leaders from academy and put a 1 oz weight on them. Use 1/0 or 2/0 kayle hooks. You don't need rod holders, just have the kids hold the rod after you cast it out. They'll think every wave is a fish! Plus when they get bored they can play on the beach and chase crabs and birds. I'd stay away from piers (because of people and Bob Hall is pretty high up). I would avoid Port A jetties because they are probably hard to walk on for little ones. Plus there isn't much for them to do after their interest wains. I'd keep trying Packery since its paved.
That's the way I'm gona do it when my boys are old enough. Hope that helps.
