My buddy Richard was kidding me about my net when we went fishing this morning. He said he thought it was to small. He was almost right.
One the most colorful big Drum I have ever seen.
One more thing, are these type of trot lines legal, the ones hung above the water like this one?

That is a pretty big-ugly, if that makes any sense.
From TPWD website:
Trotline:
Trotline:
A non-metallic main fishing line with more than five hooks attached and with each end attached to a fixture.
Nongame fish, channel catfish, blue catfish, and flathead catfish may be taken by trotline.
Red drum, spotted seatrout, and sharks caught on a trotline may not be retained or possessed.
General Construction and Design Restrictions: Trotlines may not be used with -a mainline length exceeding 600 feet;
-hooks spaced less than 3 horizontal feet apart;
-metallic stakes;
-or the main fishing line and attached hooks and stagings placed above the water's surface
On a side note, i saw lots of trot lines out there today, legal ones, that were loaded with reds. I hope they didn't get kept. I know bycatch is a necessary evil of all fisheries but it kinda sad to see a bunch of halfdead redfish about to die for nothing.

Thanks for the report and it looks like the trot line is illegal.

I thought it might be illegal. The old timers told me that Nighthawk bay used to be covered by trot lines suspended over the water like this one to the extent that you could hardly get a boat back in there.
This one is right next to the bird nesting island of the end of Pita. If you go down the Pita channel its hard to miss it. Seems like a bird could get tangled up in it pretty easy. |

is that a trot-line with hooks on it, or is that "boom! cord"?

WTH is that line? That scares the heck out of me considering how I run around in my boat before sunup during duck season. _________________ JJ |

It right here and it looked new enough. Its in shallow water but you could run into it with the right boat for sure.

Nice drum. I saw some guys out there Monday messing around with those sticks. I was wondering what they were doing. _________________ You won't know if you don't go! |

That's right behind my duck blind. Haven't fished there since duck season ended. Might have to check it out when I go out in the morning. They must be getting ready for when the spring reds go through that area. Although no one would ever do anything illegal like that |
