Howdy!

I've always heard how well FishBites work, but I have a hard time finding them in San Antonio. Instead, I have tried Gulp Stripz (Squid) and Peeler Crab (natural) baits with very limited success.

Do ya'll think one brand is better or do they work about the same? Thanks for the input. I guess no matter what I should try the shrimp flavor, it seems most popular.

They should have them at Bass Pro. Be sure to try the Yahmon catfish bait too. It works great at Braunig and the other lakes up there.

I tried Gulp crabs and shrimp in the surf years ago and couldn't get any takers. Fishn'Strips, however, work very well in every color and in shrimp, crab and clam flavors, especially when combined with bits of fresh dead shrimp. Those are the only baits I use in the surf for pomps, and I catch a ton of whiting, black drum and reds along with the pomps.

BTW, FishBites is the manufacturer's brand name; Fishn'Strips is the product name.

The gulp strips are a waste, Fishbites fish-n-strips work a lot better...

The gulp crab artificial will work occasionally bottom fished but not a much, fishnstrips will work better....

The only time i will throw a gulp crap artificial is when a pesky red wont eat a DOA terror eyez....and usually they wont hit it either

for fish 14"-40" a 4/0 lazer sharp circle hook will hold....but if your targetting the big uglies a bigger hook should be used

Bass Pro Shop sells it in the saltwater sections if im correct its right in front of the gulp stuff. And the yahmon fishbites is in the catfish section near the fishing lines.

BUT, i personaly have tried using the stuff with 0 success. I've tried yahmon crawfish and shad in pecan valley, braunic lake, calaveras lake, and millers pond. My cousin has pulled in reds off the wall in calaveras with the crawfish type.

As for the shimp and crab fish bites in the SW, still no taker. My little cousin was pulling in big pigmy perch on peices of shrimp while i was fishing inches away from him with no bites.

I take that back... I caught a puffer at indain point peir on orange shrimp fishbites. But nothing other then that. I have about 5 bags seating in the tackle box.

Tyler...They should have them at Bass Pro.
Don't shop there much but I'll look for 'em next time we go. I really just go there to look b/c of their HIGH prices...and dream that if I were rich I'd buy about 90% of what they sell.

TTH: thanks for the distinction b/w FishBites and Fishn'Strips.

Thanks for the info everybody...bummer Gulp's don't work that well. I guess the fish don't like that stench getting stuck on 'em either.

Always store your Fishn'Strips in the fridge, and if possible buy them fresh from someone like Nick who keeps them in the fridge at his shop. Otherwise, they lose their color and especially their softness much more quickly. Losing the color isn't as big a problem as their getting stiff with age. That'll make them harder to penetrate with the point of your hook, and increase the chances you'll ram that point into yourself when you force it through the strip. Surprised

When i bought them from Bass Pro they weren't in a fridge, could that cause my lack of success with them?

Honestly it doesnt matter much on there performance, once they hit the water its all the same regardless of how you kept them...

but if they get stiff you might poke your finger trying to put them on the hook haha....if you havent opened the bag then it wont matter

If I do not keep them in a dark, cool place they tend to fade....especially the pink ones!
I will try the frig storage.

I went to their website and it said they carry them in all the Walmarts in San Antonio.....I already tried 2 in the northside and they didn't have any what so ever. So now I will try Bass Pro this weekend....
