a word of caution

if anyone decides to wade out with big bloody smelly bait to throw for sharks
be sure your leader is short enough to keep out of the water on your journey out there....

i had 4 trout fillets that hung around in my fridge for a few too many days so i took them to the beach to catch a shark. got bites on the first three fillets but no hookup.. was taking the last fillet out to the second sand bar to throw it.. well my leader was too long and the fat trout fillet was dangling in the water, as i got to the sandbar i saw a 7 foot shark 15 feet away headed right at me (i had polarized glasses on). i smashed my rod in the water between us with it in free spool and took of backwards as fast as possible. its and experience i wont forget

all you need is some single strand wire(somewhere in the 108#-180# range is fine) a pretty good hook and a few ounces of weight and a descent swivel...

some people make it more complicated than it has to be

i didn't know that itorna1 thanks for the heads up i really don't fish for sharks much anymore though anyway
guess now that i think about it a buddy on the pier got a bullshark on a keeper red he said it was illegal to use as bait...worked though

Salts pretty much the same as a king rig just less hooks
i like a single J or circle,
but use a good one it doesn't have to be huge but big enough a 7/0 or 8/0 will do the trick for most fish you could cast too. you can put an egg sinker on the wire if its just a few ounces too.

careful going after any hook in a sharks mouth sometimes just cutting the wire is the best course of action...my biggest shark (400# bull bent my biggest pliers(18inch) at an 45 degree angle) Shocked

They make super snapper baits! Just cut their head off behind their fins and hook the tail onto a circle hook. The Snapper like them and the Triggers have a hard time stealing them.

I saw the poll about hardheads at the top. Is their any ecological benefit that they have? To me it seems like they just enjoy stealing bait and stabbing things...

hardheads, just like anything else out there, are ecologically important. For one, in addition to eating live food they are also scavengers and they are very numerous - put those two together you wouldn't believe what kind of positive "house cleaning"effect that has on the bays and coastal waters. Scavengers are basically a whole separate level to the food web Different species of "hard heads"or sea-cats (genus Ariopsis and Arius)occur throughout world, all the way down to brazil in the atlantic, and do pretty much the same thing ecologically wherever they are. They aren't considered a "nuisance" everywhere else in the world. The only reason it seems like there are so many of them here is because we do a pretty damn good job at removing other predators but leave them behind. If you want to catch less hardheads, use a lure. Killing them and leaving them on the shore can puncture peoples shoes and tires, and sends the wrong message to young fishermen - "if I don't use it, it doesn't deserve to live".

I've used hard heads successfully to catch reds. I was catching reds pretty effectively one day on PINS. I caught a hard head and thought I'd try it as bait. It worked.

Hardheads make good shark baits and they are great when used live for ling offshore. Just don't throw them on the beach they are bad news for people and tires.....
