Ok, I've finally decided to give hunting a try. I bought a Remington 700 ADL .270, put a fairly decent Nikon scope on it, had Starry sight it in and have been trying to shoot it at the range whenever I get the chance. I recently completed the Texas hunter safety course.

Here's my problem. I've fished all my life and have been gigging flounder since I was a kid, but besides paper, I've never shot anything.

Anyone want to offer a few words of advice as how to get started locating land to hunt on? I'm primarily interested in putting some meat in the freezer, not trophy hunting (at this time). I don't exactly have a fortune to spend, so need to keep my hunting activities within reason. I wouldn't mind trying to get some wild hog meat, and would like to be ready for some deer next season. I have family who hunt Nilgi at the YBarra ranch, but at $3k a hunt, that's a bit more than I want to spend right now.

Are there any in here that hunt the public hunting grounds? Are they worth it or is it better to try and get on a lease?

Thanks,
Michael

I run some hog hunts that r a lot of fun. You get 2 days 2 nights lodging in a fully furnished double wide , we have a new hunting truck, 18 corn feeders with blinds, walk in cooler and u can shot all the hogs and coyotes you want. n do what ever u want to with them takem r not. i have a 2000 yrd shooting range to shoot your rifle if you want. the ranch is 6000ac. we feed the roads and hunt at night as well. i need a group of 4-6 @ 350.00 per person r i can take a smaller group @ the price of 4 up to you. I guarantee you will get a shot.

If you want to pay someone the above post looks like a good deal otherwise just talk to people and be personable. Eventually you will be hunting for free!!! I have hunted 4 different ranches that way. Most of them multiple times and I have been invited back to all of them for free... "EDIT I paid for some corn 100.00 at one ranch which I hunted about 5 times and took does from" I also have bought the people breakfast or lunch on the way up or down... "Just Pennies!"

I met one of the very friendly ranch owners through this very website...!!! He invited my wife and I up without ever meeting us we stayed the weekend they even cooked us great southern cooking the whole time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Critter Getter you have a legit 2000 yard range there at that ranch? Does the weekend hog hunt give open access to the rifle range? I am more interested in 1500 yard target shooting then hunting anyday. Where is the ranch? I currently go to a friends ranch in Orange grove 1000yards. There were 17 shooters competeing yesterday there. I am sure I could get 4 or 5 guys on a weekend trip to your place and we would primarily just want to shoot targets. We would bring our own AR500 steels.

Thanks for the info y'all. I may be up for a hog hunt in the not too distant future. That sounds like a blast. I'd also love to be able to do some longer range shooting than the 100 yrd range at Starry.
