Thanks for sharing David. Your story brought back fond memories of my years in the west Texas desert hunting mule deer. Land of the 7 mm rifle. _________________ CARPE DIEM |

| Good story, I hunted in that area for a few years. I remember shooting a nice 8 point on the third shot with my 30.06 as it scrambled up the side of a canyon wall. We used to "rock" the canyons to spook them out of the cedar and oak thickets...... |

David, your story reminded me of a hunt at Elephant Mountain a few years ago.
FIL and I drew a TPWD hunt at Elephant Mountain (North of Big Bend) in 2008 for archery mule deer. That's crunchy country to try to stalk in friends, but it can be done. I stalked a 4x5 and got a shot from 62yds. Arrow was flying perfectly, but just before it hit the deer, it found a broken limb and skipped over his chest.
After we figured out their bedding pattern, FIL stalked to within 15 yards of a bedded buck but got busted trying to get clear of a bush for the shot.
We even jumped a black bear as it was leaving a water hole I was getting ready to hunt.
I learned you can hunt West Texas with archery gear, but you need to put in some time learning before you leave with game in the ice chest.
I have photos to go with the post, but don't see how to add them... anyone?
