Yesterday Sandflea asked | Quote: | | What about if you are camped on the beach for several days. Could you clean the fish at the end of each day? It sounds like you could clean them before you left for home but not at the end of each day. |
I submitted the question with a little embelishment to Kris Bishop at TP&W.
Today he responded. His response is good and very informative.
This should answer your question Sandflea
Again...his replies are in 'red'.
Say I am camping on the beach and it’s a long holiday weekend. I am having luck for a change, the fish are biting and I am putting fish in the ice chest. I know that the two day possession limit applies. One regulation that is important to remember is that you can never exceed the daily bag limit while you are actively fishing…in other words you cannot have a possession limit while you are fishing.
Can I fillet the fish at the end of day one and put the fillets on ice and repeat at the end of day two etc. or do I have to wait until I am packed up at the end of day three before I can fillet the fish? In your scenario what you must do at the end of day one is put your fish away (you may clean them-including filleting them). You can store them in a separate ice chest in your tent, cabin, motel room, etc. and leave them there- the next day you can catch another limit- but be sure to not have the first day’s catch in your immediate possession. My suggestion would be to keep the first day’s fillets where you store your other iced-down food-…and have a second ice chest with you on the beach or pier and then when you are through fishing that day you may clean that day’s catch and you may combine them. At that point you have reached your possession limit.
Say I have fished for three days. Not exceeding my limit any of those days, I have put 20 speckled trout on ice (gutted and or filleted) and have eaten six. At any time during your camping trip you may eat or give away your fish…at that point they no longer count towards your possession limit. It would be possible to have an extended stay at the beach and catch 10 trout everyday, and eat 10 trout everyday and never have to worry about a possession limit- as long as you do not exceed your daily bag limit on any given day. I have left the carcasses of the six where they may be found at the campsite. The game ranger stops and checks my catch. I would get rid of carcasses- they stink and attract fire ants!
He counts the twenty trout in the ice chest and sees the six trout carcasses. Am I in trouble? If you do as I suggested you should not have any problems…you should also educate yourself on “wildlife resource document”. It is discussed in the Outdoor Annual (the hunting/fishing regulations) it is available free at Walmart, Academy, and bait stores that sell licenses. A sample form is on page 96 of this year’s Outdoor Annual or printed off our website: www.tpwd.state.tx.us/publications/annual/general/transfer/ Whenever you give a resource (fish/bird/animal) to another person you should fill out a wrd and they should keep it with the resource until they reach final destination…the same if say you had 2 friends (they each had a fishing license) they came to the beach and fished with you one day and you each caught 10 trout and then they had to go to a business meeting- they obviously wouldn’t want to take the fish with them. But each one of them could fill out a wrd (they will have to put down their name, address, and phone number) and leave their fish with you- at that point you would have 30 fish in your possession- but the wrd would exempt you for those 20 fish your friends caught.
Thank you again, You’re Welcome! _________________ WORK TO LIVE, LIVE TO FISH |

| Thanks for the info. I will print it & put it in my tacklebox. I will still be a little weary of if the game warden that is checking me is up on these interpretations. I often stay on the beach 4 to 5 days and filleting the fish would be better for the meat, & more space in my icechest. |
