On Laguna Shores rd. between Graham and Lola Johnson rd there is a small bridge. There is a grand white pelican with a broken wing that was clipped by a ford truck that was going way to fast. I made several attempts to catch him but he kept swimming out. He was still there this morning at 3:30 am sitting on a patch of ground beside the bridge. I'm sure he won't make it much longer. Maybe the right person will read this and go out and catch him today and get him to a person that works on fixing birds. That would be nice.

Emailed your post to Tony Amos, 2 people with USFWS, and Pat Suter with Sierra Club. Sounds like it will take a team, and possibly a boat, to chase it down, if it doesn't die from trauma or shock. It would be better for the pelican, too, if it had multiple captors, so one could immobilize the beak while others grab the body and wrap the wing up against it. That done, place it in a large cardboard box and call Tony, the USFWS, or possibly the Texas State Aquarium. Sorry, I don't have phone numbers for them. Pat Suter may know those. Hers is 852-7938.

I know some people down at the Aransas Rehabilitation Keep (ARK) and sadly most of the time there is little they can do for birds with broken wings, beyond adminisering a pain killer which is usually followed by euthanasia.
You would be surprised how many injured and helpless birds get turned in to Tony down there. Throughout the year many of the birds come in covered in fishing line. This time of year its mostly ducks...lots of them, for obvious reasons. Last week there was a large number of cormorants that were "acting drunk" and were obviously very sick. I suspect that it was the red tide toxins. I think a lot of those birds didn't make it. Like IMS said, its kinda tough for me to get weepy over a few grackles or seagulls but when its a big white pelican struggling, I guess it could be very tough to watch. |

If you haven't already, please give those friends at the ARK a call about this bird. I can't guarantee my email will get through to Tony in a timely manner, and I got no answer at the Suter's phone number just now.
I'd attempt catching it myself if I had a long-handled net and a box to put the pelican into. I released unharmed another brown pelican that flew into my line at PINS just last Thursday. I've had USFWS training on handling oiled, sick and/or injured birds, and even caught a peregrine falcon for them once. Sadly, it was emaciated and could barely fly because it had been poisoned by eating lead-filled waterfowl, and it died soon after a trip to the vet.

Just spoke with Tom Shearer at the USFWS and found he'd read my email. He'll check into it.
BTW, he said the bird should be taken to the Texas State Aquarium if caught. TSA doesn't chase birds, but does rehab them.

The bird would let me get within almost touching distance before he moved off. I could have got him with a lasso or a net easy. I have rescued a pelican before that had a double hook leader with one hook in it's mouth and the other stuck in his foot. The bird was calm and never tried to bite me or even fight. This one should be no problemo. If he is still there this afternoon I will catch him.

I just got word from the Texas State aquarium that the usfws went to the spot and could not find the bird. They told me to notify them if I see the bird this afternoon. I will look for it as I have no plans for afterwork. Just me my binoculars and the upper deck.

I drove thru Laguna Shore this morning after dropping kid of at school, didn't see anything either, that was at 0715..... Hope the big guy makes it!
