I want to buy a boat, just don't know what to get. the 2 most important things are:
1. being able to travel without worring if I'll run out of gas.
2. I want to be able to get up in a 1' of water with no problem.
any advise would help,
thanks _________________ FIRELINE WILL ' GET ER DUN '! |

Hey FireLine,
I have an Alumaweld, 18Ft by 96 " beam, tunnel with a 90 hp Yamaha and I never tried to get up on top in a foot of water. I can RUN in a foot without any trouble but I dont think I'd try a hole shot. I'd have to tuck the lower unit all the way under the transom and run do-nuts wide open until the bow breaks over. I know a bunch of guys that do this but I just won't mistreat my boat that way. About fuel : I have a 15 gal. tank; the motor peaks at 4800 rpms and with a light load in shallow water runs 41 mph with a gps and consumes about 6 gallons per hour. I usually run 3200 rpm at 30 mph and burn just under 4 gals. per hr. Hope this helps you decide. |

How much money do you want to spend?
How fast do you want to go?
New or used?

A ton of options, all depends on the pocket book. Lots of good options even for the budget minded angler on good used boats. Don't let someone convince you that you have to spend 30K to get a good flats boat. There are many boats tat would fit what you need. _________________ Later,

I will be buying my first boat, so I'm going to start with a good used boat. I'm looking for 18' or more. I don't know a lot about boats so i don't have a clue as to how fast of a boat I should get. I just want a fast one that I can travel in without worrying about running out of gas. My dad has a 190T BLUE WAVE with a 90hp yamaha. You can't travel in that boat very far without being afraid of not making it back to the boat dock and I would probably like to go faster than what it goes. I also what a boat that will keep me dry on the ride. I hate boats that just soak you on the way to your favority hole.
thanks for all the help. _________________ FIRELINE WILL ' GET ER DUN '! |

this is gonna draw some fire, for sure, but the few blue waves I have driven do not seem to get the same gas mileage as many other boats I have driven.....
you might want to go with Poppadunns suggestion on an aluminum boat, they get good gas mileage.....flats boats, in general, will give you good gas mileage, but are not necessarily completely dry boats.....which bay system are you going to be running in?
if you're going to be running Matagorda, you'll want a different type of boat than say running the upper laguna madre......
Like Capt Mike Singleterry said,
how much do you want to spend?
new or used?
which bay system, etc.?
maybe you need to hang out with friends with boats and go for rides to check different hulls/motors out, take a guide, or make a friend at a boat shop....
just my two cents.... |

This is not the "sexiest" boat out there, but you could learn a lot in it. The 19' Carolina Skiff would probably do what you want it to do. Again, you might not look like you have a huge bank account, but you could still get to the fish, if you know where they are. After a few years of learning, you can always trade it in on something else. I don't own one of these boats, but I have ridden in a 20'. It will be rough at times, just slow down and don't beat yourself to death. I'm curious about your dad's Blue Wave. How many gallons of gas does the tank hold? |

AHH, I WAS JUST INFORMED WHY SOME BOATS CAN TRAVEL REALLY FAR! IT'S BECAUSE THEY HAVE A 40-50 GALLON GAS TANK. MY DAD'S BLUE WAVE IS 20 I THINK. _________________ FIRELINE WILL ' GET ER DUN '! |

i like my aluminum flat bottom girl ,gets up shallow, economical, low maintenance, but only 16 ft w/a 40 tohatsu.wide bottom ,planes slow, great for flats crusin, drifts good,32mph,great for two dudes, three if they all got it together.long range on 6 gal.not your glamorus dude rig,but does the job.next boat maybe a 18ft alum.same weld-craft with a 70 tohatsu wide bottom. for me no need for speed..i just blast off a little earlier. _________________ I LIKE MINE FRIED. |

| my buddy has a 21' redfish line majek, and he can get up in a foot of water.Take into consideration he has a TRP yamaha v-max 150. Four strokes get good gas mileage, but two strokes have more torque for better hole shots. I've heard good things about the e-tecs, 2 stroke with four stroke mileage. what ever you buy make sure it has at least a pocket tunnel, you can buy different prop that will give a better bite out of the hole but you'll comprimise top speed. you're best bet would be to go to a boat dealer and talk to someone about exactly what you're looking for. sorry for the long paragraph. theres too much to go into. |

I have a 21' Cajun with a 150 Johnson. It will get up in about 2'ft of water and runs top end about 42 mph. It is the last fiberglass boat I will own. My next boat will be one of the new aluminum bay boats for sure. Why!
1. Lighter boat and pulls with much less of a towing rig with much better gas mileage on the tow vehicle.
2. You can use a smaller motor on the aluminum boat and still get the same performance.
3. Better gas mileage.
4. Fewer maintenance and repair problems with the aluminum boat.
5. You can run a fiberglass boat in rougher water, but I have gotten to the point that if its rough I don't go out anyway. |

| I've fished out of 2 different Majek RFL 18'. These boats are absolute shallow water MACHINES. Propped and trimmed just right, and with a good skipper, they will get up in less than 1' of water. My bro. in law could run his rfl through a ditch with the water narrower than the boat. Awesome! BUT, these are the wettest boats I have ever been in. In the winter, I would not board those boats if not wearing waders. My 16' jon boat is much drier. There is not a perfect boat out there. Think of how you will fish and go with what you will need. |
