Long time forum reader here...as in 5+ years. So first off I would like to thank all who have posted here for all the valuable advice as well as allowing me to fish vicariously through all of you since I live a little ways from the coast and dont fish near as much as I would like.

Since I primarily fish the jetties at Port A or at Port O'Connor, Ive always wondered what the best way to keep the fish I catch out there the freshest. Is it by gutting them, bleeding them, or just keeping alive on a stringer? Also, does it differ by species? I have gutted fish before a time or two, but never felt like I was doing it right, so I usually just get em on a stringer and try to keep em in the water and alive as long as possible, which works sometimes, but not always. Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Without ice to put them in/on, bleeding or gutting just kills the fish and starts the spoiling process.

You can ice them intact, but add saltwater to your chest - a tip from Capt. Mike Singleterry that works like a champ. Also prevents the osmotic water loss that leads to a 15" trout becoming a 14.5" trout when the warden measures it.

I dont like to stringer fish on the jetty because sometimes the waves can wash the fish between rocks getting them stuck. Ice chest is good to keep in the truck. I just walk fish back to the ice chest when catching

Best way is straight into the ice

If not feasible, a stringer with a crab float on end.

Float keeps stringer of fish from washing and wedging in rocks.

@ silver - yea, that's the problem I have run into several times as well. Thing is, I don't take an ice chest on the jetty cause of how far out I walk.

@ critter - lol, that's usually the way I keep em fresh too! Smile

Thanks for the tips guys, looks like I'll keep doing what I'm doing.
