I always see Reds are good on Estes Flats on mullet?

How do you fish mullet on he flats, poppin cork like gulps or shrimp? freeline? anchor up and wait?

I usually drift the flats and cast arty's or gulps, not sure how you would fish a mullet that way...

Was going to fish packery and then jetties or BHP, but now am thinking inside and a little north may be better.

Any opinions?

Thanks for you help as always.

not sure where your talking about but i fish my live finger mullet under a float usually(im in the laguna keeps it out of the muck) i always try to freeline when i can. a small 1/2 egg sinker is small enough not to be noticed buy most fish, i don't use slit shots much they can compromise your line strength

If you're drifting, put them under a popping cork and work them like a shrimp. Just give a strike in extra second or two before you set the hook.

When drifting Estes flats I use a clear bubble (the kind you can add water to) and three way swivel (Almost rigged like a lemon rig) a 5/0 wide gap hook with live mullet. Cast into the sand pockets long before you drift through it and let it set there just keeping the slack out of your line. Once you get to the sand pocket, cast to the next one. There will be Reds in these pockets...Adios

the skipper nailed it.. sandpockets and drifting or bumping down flats slowly. water bubbles are great for casting and fish wont feel them when they pick up the bait. If you are trying on the bottom use slip wieghts so fish can pick up the bait and take there time. Avoid double drop steel leaders and stick with mono or flourocarbon..

I usually count to 10 before setting the hook when I use mullet. Those 10 sec. seem like 10 min though, but be patient.

I'll do the same, however I crush the mullet up before tossing it out. Sounds nasty but them reds sure do love it.

I use em free-lined carolina rig. 20-30lb leader line to your hook, small barrel wieght on line above your swivel. Same set up for live croakers to.

I know a family of stubborn Reds and have been asking around for tips on how to catch one of these critters! One of the latest tricks I got was to freeline a good chunk of cut mullet into pot holes as you drift.....

I will taylor this method and throw directly into them or in front of them as I can clearly see them! The other thing is I need another drift sock cuz I think I'm passing them to fast lastly I need a powerpole every time I see a pod and put the anchor out they disappear, they look like submarines that are diving and go poof! Lol

Keep us posted on your techniques and outcomes!

The sand pockets or bare spots are usually effective but i dont linger long if the spot holds fish they will be on the bait quick in most situations. I like about 3 ft of flouro(usually 15lb) then small black swivel with 1/2 ounce or lighter egg sinker slid up the main line(usually 12lb) I like to keep it sporty. As far as the hook goes I'm liking the owner SSW knife point in chrome black, sizes 2/0 to 5/0 depending on bait size.
