| Time for a new net for the beach. I'm thinking about getting a nicer net, calusa, black pearl, or something like that. I usually just get an academy special, which I think is 3/8 mesh size. Works fine at catching finger mullet, but it also gills a lot of baby whiting and shad. Anyone know whether going down to 1/4 or up to 1/2 makes things better while still sinking fast (1/4) and not letting the mullet swim out (1/2)? |

For what it's worth, I agree about going smaller. I have a HIGH DOLLAR 10 footer (20' diameter) that's 3/8" or 1/2" and at times it take forever to get all of the bait out of it because of being "gill hung"!!! _________________ Dave

| Just add your own longer rope and you'll love it, kind of like sniping fish from a distance, one decent cast and you'll have a good amount of bait |

| OK, I'm new to this net casting thing. Which is best, the plastic or cotton. What net size is best for all around casting,What size holes, and what size weights? And is this mostly used in the surf for catching bait? |

I'd think the 3/8 size hole in clear monofilament has been the best so far for me....I am throwing an Old Salt Betts Net in the 3.5' radius.....just right for casting in knee high water in the surf...sinks real fast with the lead weighs...I think it has 1.5 lbs per foot.....I've used a few other specials from academy and stuff...but that Old Salt just "feels" right......btw soak it overnight in 1 cup fabric softener in with water in a five gallon bucket.....it'll "soften" it up the next day.....
I am not sure but going with a smaller mesh may slow your sink rate.....anyone know about this? |

Back to the subject: a smaller mesh size probably would slow the sink rate a shade, but like the old saying goes, "there's no free lunch". You get what you pay for in a cast net just like most other things in life. The better ones have more lead so they sink faster than the cheap models regardless of mesh size. Then there's the size. Don't expect tool A to do the job of tool C, let alone tool B. If one's worried about the net sinking too slow then they should consider buying and learning to throw a larger net and also be willing to pay for what they receive. The large the diameter of the net the further any bait has to swim to escape the sinking edge. Split seconds matter with cast nets!!!!!
As the the "cotton or plastic" thing....................... I've never seen a cotton cast net but even if they do exist it's a no brainer: cotton rots when wet and plastic doesn't. That may bother a tree hugger and I surely don't like all of the plastic trash on the beach and floating in the oceans, but when it comes to CAST NETS, the choice is elementary.
STX, since YOU brought the government into this: They can be traced to, attached with or partly/completely responsible for the problems posted about in many of the threads on this forum. Fortunately, this ain't one of them! _________________ Dave
