|
|
I waded out this weekend to the concrete slab south of Phill Demitt peir that I havnt fished since they opened the ditch leading towards the sewage plant. Fished there for 3 hours w/ not even a bite useing live mullet.
After giving up I went home and took my bathing suite off and threw it in the shower to rinse off after I ate. 20 minutes later I walked into the bathroom and unmistakable aroma of raw sewage. I checked the tooilet seal and the smell wasn't from there so I though sewage was backing up in the shower, NOPE! I picked up my bathing suite and it reaked of raw sewage. I know I didn't cr@p my pants so it had to of came from the city plant. My question is, has anyone else waded in this area and had the same encounter, AND can the city release sewage into our water system!!
I know I will not go back and I certainly will not eat any fish from this area for a while. I have thought about calling the city but like evertything else I'm afraid it will fall on deaf ears _________________ "If you aint livin' on the edge then your taking up to much space."

No they cannot legally dump untreated sewage into the water. Call the city. Even if they don't listen at least you've done your part. _________________ "Ya'll must eat a lot of fish" |

The fishing may not be a pleasure but don't worry about the fish. Cripes, crabs and lobsters taste GREAT and don't make us sick, and look at the crap that they feed on!!!!!!
Unless you're talking heavy metals and fatty fish, what a fish eats or the water it lives in doesn't have much to do with it's table quality.
From 1967 until 1970 I lived right on the Potomac River in Quantico VA. Maybe 20-25 miles south of DC, and at the time one of the most filthy. stinking rivers in the country. I fished at least 330 days a year for that time and ALWAYS ate what I caught. Except for the catfish, everything tasted great and I never had any problems............................... but probably ingested more heavy metals and other BS than I needed to!!!!!!!!
Very conversely: Up here in Arkansas there's a beautiful spring fed waterway up in the NE called the Spring River. The water is clean and cold year round and the food chain great. The flathead cats and smallmouth bass from there taste CRAPPY!!!!!! _________________ Dave

| If this is the one in the bluff north of the causeway. The treatment plants have a discharge pipe south of the pier. If the treatment facility has a mechanical failure the system automatically dumps into the the laguna. Any are near these tratment plants is open to this situation. I sureveyed all of the plants in the oso, laguna and whightcap. The exposure to raw sewage is very common as the facilities struggle with capacity. |

I don't know if it has anything to do with a capacity issue, but I know the city has been doing some utilities work recently in town. A lift station was recently worked on near Airline and Wooldridge. The whole system could have been affected. _________________ Fish hard. You never know when you'll make you last trip south. |

Yes, this is from the treatment plant north of the causway. I lived in the park right next to it for over a year and never experianced this before, but then again this year they cut a path in the sand back towards the plant. Yes there is a lot of poo in the bluff!!
tbart you would think that if the city did experiance a problem of any sort to dump into the bay it would have to be reported and monitored the quantity but then again that would be the right thing to do... _________________ "If you aint livin' on the edge then your taking up to much space."

I visited the pier yesterday and the water level was super low, I wonder if the byproduct (sulfa) of all the seaweed baking for the last few days has anything to do with the smell?
IDK if it was is or wasn't but was the old concrete pipe that was there last year connected to any storm drainage system?
I waided right in front of it 2 yrs ago for a whole summer season and never had any issues, maybe it is a valid concern!
P.S. One of my fav spots for Reds throw back towards shoreline with some scrimp! _________________ I wasn't born in the Bluff but I got here as fast as I could! |

It was by product alright but not from the seaweed, to me a very distict difference. I lived in the park just across the street for a year, fished there often and I never came home with raw sewage smell on my cloths . I know the concrete pipe your talking about between the pier and concrete structure. That pipe releases water all the time and I never smelled sewage from it in the past.
It has always been an awesome redfishing spot but I havn't caught anything there in a while in decent numbers , maybe it has to do with this problem _________________ "If you aint livin' on the edge then your taking up to much space."

True True! I fished there cuz my boat was out of commish (couple yrs back) then last yr had lotsa hours I put in at work..... This yr I've been busy catching nothing on the boat! Lol
Very interesting to see what becomes of this, maybe we can charge them a fine for illegal dumping! Lol... _________________ I wasn't born in the Bluff but I got here as fast as I could! |

Now I have spoke with the coast guard and they only handle it if it's off shore. So now I'm waiting for someone from TCEQ to call me and pass on the info to them _________________ "If you aint livin' on the edge then your taking up to much space."
