Made our way south and got to the spot around 11am. Water was low but first gut looked good. Some bait in the water and water itself was pretty clear. Tide was strong, kept moving 4 ounce spider weights down the beach. 3 times I rigged my 14 footerand three times the casts snapped the line, losing all rigs. Got pissed and threw the almost dead quantum reel somewhere that I will always know where it is. I now hate trilene mono line. All I caught all day were frickin whiting and one skippy.
My wife however has atleast some luck. About 2pm with the tide coming in she hooks into a big red in the first gut on her combo of gulp sand flea and orange shrimp fishbite. She gets him all the way up to within three feet, but the fish gets high on the exposed first bar and her line snaps. I jump on the fish but miss with my hands. I land on him, get up to try again as we are both dazed and he manages to scurry away in a wave. We both just feel sick. He woulda gone about 30 inches. She rigs up again and manages to hook another smaller yet prolly keeper red, but her lin snaps again. She rigs again, only to have her line snap again on what I think was a ray. She did land a perty 15 inch red tho.
I don't get it. We use cajun line mono for the most part with good results. Her mono was new, I just cleaned her reel last week and spooled fresh line. We just had a bad day I guess. Maybe someone will catch that piece of you know what with a 4 ounce spider weight trailer. Left at 5:30 with choppy water and tide comin up fast. Tons of mullet and millions of fry in the water as we left.[/u] _________________ Fortune favors the brave... |

| I always use 14lb or 20 lb BG for my surf reels. Holds up great against abrasion from the sand bars. Do not use braid, as the abrasion on the bars will run through braid fast. Learned that lesson the hard way. Anyway, never had any problems with BG. |

Either wayyy to light a line, I use 17lb and have had 37-43 inch reds hit it hard with no drag and still not break
I use 30 pound In the surf
A bad spool possibly
Or bad knots |

I'm no math wizard, so I did a quick search on how much force is generated with a 4 once weight and a 14' rod. This is a close as I came, but it's just as I figured....................... WAY more than 17 lbs!!!!! http://www.stripersonline.com/t/618789/is-there-a-formula-rod-reel-line-weight-technique-distance
I love braid and use it exclusively on all of my gear for all fishing techniques, but I don't fish the surf much. It seems to me that you could have the best of both worlds using a REALLY long shock leader of "strong enough to get the job done" mono, say 50 yards or so, and back that with braid for casting distance and feel, and lack of as much line drag in the current. _________________ Dave

rule is casting with 4oz weight you need at least 40lb shock leader with five wraps around the reel. You may have stretched it out weakening the line. I have 70lb shock leader for 5.25 ounce spider weights and bait. _________________ Like Corpusfishing.com on Facebook! |

You need to use a shock leader. Consider it a success that you are now generating enough power to snap the line in the cast. You are now past the "sand the floor", "paint the fence" and "wax on wax off" stage. At least that is what I thought when it happened to me:)
This is from Breakaway:
http://www.breakawayusa.com/howto/shock-leader/
You will find a million opinions on shock leaders and knots. Just google it and you will see. I stick to the 10 times your weight rule. If I am not using a tapered leader I find longer is better. Something like 10 times around the reel then up and down lets the knot pass though with no snags. |

I throw BG 30#, 50# shock leader. With the massive force that I throw with I need heavy. _________________ "Charlie Don't Surf" |

I use 15-17lb P-Line. I put on either a 25lb to 40lb shock leader about two to three times the length of my 10' pole. With my 4oz spider weights and "unmassive" force behind my casts, that works for me. Only problem I have is an occasional bite off from a toothy critter of some kind. I love my P! _________________ Mike |
