I'm looking to hunt some coyotes plaguing the rancher who owns the dove lease we're on. I was considering getting a new rifle for this purpose and was obviously looking at either a .223 or a .22-250. Can someone offer me some advice on which to choose? I'm suspecting this is like the 9MM vs 40 cal debate, i.e. they both have pros and cons but in the end it's just a preference thing and neither has a clear advantage over the other. If that is the case, just let me know.
Thanks,
Ol Sanch _________________ Do you even fish, Bro? |

.223.
everyone make a rifle in this round.
ammo is cheaper and availbe everywhere.
many different bullets and wts. availiable in loaded ammo.
22-250 is an exellant cal. but the 223 is just much more common _________________ the creepy uncle that scares the kids.... |

| Main differences are cost of ammo and ballistics. The 22-250 is better at long distances, but the ammo is about 75% more expensive. With that said, unless you're shooting 100's or 1000's of rounds a year, the extra cost will not be that much over the long term. I have been using a 22-250 for several years and I'm only on the third box of shells. It's a varmint killing machine. |

| A 243 is a much better cal. IMO, flat shooting and heavier bullet to reach out and touch something, good pig round also. |

If you dont reload then just go with the 223. If you reload buy the 22-250. It can reach 1000 yards..... it is a flat shooting gun. I have not been able to make my 223 get past 600...... I DO NOT OWN a 22-250 but have many 223's so I am not speaking from experience.
223 is cheaper. 223 will work for the your task. 223 is likely best choice unless you have the opportunity to shoot long ranges .223....
243 is definitely even better!!!!!!!! The 243 has been beating everyone at the 1000 yard competitions. It has been beating the 260's left and right!!!! |

I like the .204 ruger in savage. right out of the box and scoped and was head shooting does at 150 to 200 yds with no problems. Its quite the tack driver. _________________ Common sense is not COMMON |

223 open sights 200 meters right on the money. What more do you need for shooting a starving coyote? I like my 223 mini 14. Its spot on. _________________ I LIKE MINE FRIED. |

I agree the .223 is the most common and easy to get ammo. I have a 22-250 that I have killed more coyotes with than deer. As a matter of fact, I shot a lone coyote last sunday morning out behind the house that had been harassing my dogs just about every night. I over shot him the first shot but he stopped for one last look at me when he came to the brush line and that was his last mistake. I ranged it with my finder at 336 yrds. I had a AR .223 for awhile but I just like the 22-250 more. Thats just my preference. _________________ Come out of the grass with your fins up....... |
