|
|
| About 11am this morning I saw a small aluminum bass boat with 4 guys going out thru the channel. The tide is ripping out with breaking waves and very strong currents. I turned away for a few seconds and heard the sound of a prop spinning in the air. The boat is upside down with all of the men, and all of their stuff heading out to sea. Several of the men attempted to swim to the jetties, but the current was too strong, so they swam back to the boat with no life jackets. Fortunately, the boat was still floating upside down, and they were able to hang on to the edges Meanwhile, lifeguards show up about 5 minutes later with surfboards? By this time the boat is a quarter of mile offshore being blown out by northeast winds. Hopefully, the coast guard came to their rescue...... |

If the wind was blowing anything in Corpus like it is in Kerrville (30 gusting to 40) only TRUE IDIOTS would be going anywhere out and around in Packery channel, especially 4 guys in one aluminum boat. It brings to mind the saying NO BRAINS NO HEADACHES.
Truly Amazing!!!!! |

Ya can't fix stupid!!!!
The thing about the NE winds blowing them out to sea got me wondering........................ NE winds at Packery jetties would basically be blowing parallel with the beach give or take a little. I wasn't there and I'm not clairvoyant, but the past conditions for the NAS @ 10:56 AM this morning show a NNW wind @ 20 MPH, which when combined with an outgoing tide would take them out fairly well! That slightly offshore wind direction would also hold the wave faces up a little longer before breaking............................ great for surfing but not too smart for a small boat going out a pass and what sounds like a heavy load!!

Hopefully their kids will learn from their mistakes. I never really thought about it until my Dad brought it up, but if there was a northerly wind that would push you out to sea, it could prove fatal if you did not have a GPS and a ship to shore radio. _________________ "OVER A MILLION SPECIES ON THIS PLANET AND HUMANS ARE THE ONLY ONE THAT CREATES GARBAGE" |

Give it a try in February when the water's cold as ice and the current is ripping down the coast, heading for Tampico!!! I've surfed out there that time of year with no wetsuit and I can tell anyone interested that within 5 minutes I couldn't even grip the rails of my board anymore and my jaw muscles were so stiff that I could barely talk!!!!!
Those "boaters" are darn lucky that the water was warm and that nobody got knocked out or injured during the capsize........................... one or all might not be here anymore! _________________ Dave

| Definately a lesson learned for these guys. I work for the city and responded to this incident; we were able to get everyone to shore without any injuries. |

People don't under stand that just cause the sea may be small. at the end of a channel, packery for sure. the waves will build up and can be a lot bigger and closer together coming out the end. A lot of guys just don't under stand. I have taken water over my bow on my 30' fountain a lot of times heading out packery to get off shore to fine it to be a realy nice day. Packery is not a friendly channel to small boats. I said it when it first opened and ill say it again.
SOMEONE IS GOING TO GET KILLED IN THAT CHANNEL IN A SMALL BOAT JUST A MATTER OF TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hope i'm wrong but i know i'm not!!!!!!!!!!
To many people trying to run small boat out of it. You run out in a bay boat 15-20 miles lots of guys doing it and the wind comes up. your in trouble fast.

Glad to hear they are OK. Putting myself in their shoes I would have been freaking out, especially with an outgoing tide like that.
First run outside the jetties in my 32' with an experienced captain, we purposely went out in 5-6's so he could show me how the boat handled, and what to do (and not do) getting in an out of packery, on an outgoing tide. Let me just say that that was exciting. _________________ Jeff

I was offshore yesterday on a charter, and heard the CG call over the radio...glad to hear everyone was rescued safely.
Yesterday was NOT the day to take a small boat offshore, and definitely NOT the day to try to do it out of Packery channel.
As terrible as the fishing has been out there lately I'm not sure why you'd want to try it anyways _________________ I'd rather be fishing |

Critter gitter, you are probably correct in your assessment, but it's a free country, not everyone has a whole lot of sense (especially when boats and alcohol are involved) and trying to protect people from themselves is a proven fallacy. Case in point: all of the cities that have the strictest "gun control" laws also have the highest crime rates. The local governments think that they know best how to protect the citizens but the law only shows up AFTER someone is injured or dead!!!!! Remember, guns don't kill people, people kill people. Also, everybody drives a freaking weapon and we all know how well that goes...............................
Likewise and IMHO; Packery pass is GREAT place, I love to go there in my little POS aluminum boat and fish, inside and out. You can't legislate common sense and you also can't force someone/anyone to learn how to handle a boat and/or to stay sober while doing it, but...............................................don't blame it on the pass!!!! Would I rather have a larger boat with a V hull for such times? Sure thing, but that doesn't mean that what I or someone else have/has now can't and doesn't safely get the job done with skill, care, prudence and a good old dose of common sense.
