|
I hit North Packery around 0800. No wind, zero surf, and excellent water clarity. I started off with my 11wt fly rod and kept getting cut off. There were several large cart wheeling Kings blowing up mullet towards the end of the jetty. Switched over to spinning gear and lost 2 woodpecker Super Spooks on spectacular blow ups ( I never had so much fun losing tackle). I ended up switching over to a large Gotcha with 4 inches of wire over the top. Ended up with this King and called it a day. Total time on the jetty: 40 minutes. Measured it out at 45 inches from tip of tail to nose. Hopefully conditions stay the same because Wednesday is the next time I'll be able to hit the water. =)

It was a lot of fun, I haven't seen Kings hit on top like that before, but I'm usually only chasing reds in the skinny stuff with my fly rod. I just might have to upgrade my jetty gear because that King had my little Shimano 4000 screaming. Anyways, I might launch my yak off the beach later in the week if conditions stay the same.

Well, so far those lower end Shimanos haven't let me down. I sink most of my money in my fly gear. However, there might be a higher end spinning reel in my future. =) _________________ Laguna Madre Fly Fishers of Corpus Christi |

| Very nice, I was out at North Packery yesterday around that same time, the clarity was about 2-4 feet, greenish, and nobody landed a king, red, or smack from 630-930am when I left. I threw the gotcha all morning and caught bluefish, a few sandtrout, a speck and that was about all I saw come up. Glad to hear today was much better. |

| Sounds like a blast Harris. Am thinking of maybe hitting surf Wed and stopping of at Packery on my return. Would go tomorrow but have to give up some blood in the morning. |

Hey Tom, maybe I'll see you out there. Still debating whether to launch a yak from the beach to find some smacks. Either way, I'll be there Wednesday. =) Just hoping this weather holds out. Water was niice this morning.

"However, there might be a higher end spinning reel in my future. =)"
There have been some Shimano Stella's on Ebay selling for between $250 and $400. Those are $1000 reels. Can't get much better than them.
What broke on your Stradics?? It's pretty hard to damage a Shimano.
I have been looking at the newest Okuma V system Spinning reels and would love to try one. They have a new dual drag system on them. Okuma Vsystem is Okuma's Top of the line for around $169.00. The reels are maxing out at 18-24lbs drag. The reels are outfitted with 15 ball bearings. I wonder where they put them all. The Vsystem reels have 5 year warrantees. |

Still too much money for me. =) Maybe I'll just stick with my 70.00 Shimano until it craps out. _________________ Laguna Madre Fly Fishers of Corpus Christi |

| Awesome fishing report! And I must agree, when I visit Bob Hall Pier, I also have so much fun losing my tackle whenever something big hooks up. |

I sight casted about a 25 pound king in the wade gut on Saturday in the high 20's on PINS. I was geared with a 2 oz manolure in chartreuse. I casted about 10 times and couldn't seem to hit in front of the fish that was darting everywhere chasing mullet. I finally got him to hit and wow what a blistering run on a trout rod! I had it on for about 15 seconds until it rocketed out of the water and threw the lure. I have never seen one in that close. It was following a school of ladyfish and mullet that were busting the water. VERY cool, even though I didn't land it.
The mullet were thick on PINS this weekend, it looked like October - everything moving South. Small sharpnose and bonnetheads were everywhere too.

Joy Marshall and her husband ran into Kings yesterday near the ten on PINS. I will post some pics. _________________ Like Corpusfishing.com on Facebook! |
