Welcome to the crappiest report I've ever written.
"No cheese, no deals and no G's, no wheels and no keys, no boats, no snowmobiles and no ski's"...wait that's Dre...moving along out of the mid 90's now...
It's the month of August, the drought is in full effect, temps are in the 100's, the Nueces County Appraisal District has royally boned about half the county on our taxes this year including yours truly, and I'm broke but now the proud owner of two new Avet 50s. Like everything else in my life good or bad, all of the above call for a mandatory fishing trip. After riding over into my off time to pay for said reels, I got home with only 6 days off after three and a half weeks away. Glorious. Not. But fishing I would go.
I hit Bob Hall pier friday night to meet with Albert Z, who had big baits out and bigger aspirations and promised to not be leaving the pier till late sunday, even for a bathroom break. Around 5am I called it a night and headed home, convinced that my first night on the pier wouldn't be my last, even if the fishing remained quiet for most of the middle of the night. Sure enough, his almost 13ft Tiger shark hit the bait with all the stealth of a freight train about half an hour after I feel asleep back at home. Almost....as awesome.... as the Nueces County Appraisal Office. Ah well....but I'm still never forgiving myself for leaving early. ARGH!
I got to the beach late on Saturday to scout the beach, catch bait, and really just relax and see different friends. Come Sunday I headed home to regroup, bait up, ice up, meet with my welder and do last minute rack mods, and try to get some rest after almost a month of six hours on six hours off watch schedules. The mission for the short trip I would be able to take before heading back to work would be shark and a little kayak recon.
Upon waking up Monday morning, the full fury of Corpus' morning breakfast taco rush hour was upon me as the Dodge plowed lesser vehicles out of the way and I attempted to sip my coffee while driving over month old potholes that my 4 grand a year property tax just can't seem to get fixed.
The mayhem was insane.
At least one parking lot was empty.
Got cut off by 5 cars and I hadn't even merged yet. Obviously the Appraisal Board's fault.
And as usual, I could breath again, once on the hallowed ground of the national seashore. May it never fall into the evil hands of the appraisal office.
What a beautiful shade of blue green.
At this point, it was noon on Monday afternoon, and I knew that to reach my chosen location in the desired timeframe would leave me lacking in the ability to slowly cruise the beach, catch bait, and search for hot women. But such is life. On I rolled, until a baitball near the blacktop caught my attention.
Off I went to explore.
After these few crappy pictures, I knew I had to get moving.
And the beach looked great for a change. Wonder what it could be "appraised" at?
And the kayak rack cradle mod worked as hoped.
Yarborough, having heard it was just cleared out, was still pretty soft.
Pretty cool...
And as the day dragged along, "Ole Possum" was brought back from the cd crypt to moan the oldies and goodies all over again.
No, this is not "G-Unit," and there are no club dance ringtones for this man. "Appraised" for $6.99 at your local Dollar General.
And finally, the sun began to draw low in the sky, and I just about had my baits run after some last minute trace building marathon sessions...
Finally!
Extreme. Thankyou, keeper of better fishing reels..."Appraised" for $599.
Silent and waiting!
And as the night went on, all three baits would be crabbed out. Dissappointing. Once again the Appraisal board's fault.
And the morning brought a good sunrise and the promise of more heat. Waking up to this view cannot be beat.
And the moon was still up but setting over the dunes.
And the baits.....were more than a little stripped BARE.
And it became time to head out in the yak and see what I could get into. Maybe a reduction in my property appraisal.
Having left the majority of my lures behind inadvertently in my last minute packing, the one lure I had to troll would get whacked but the hook spit several times.
As the winds picked up I headed back in to get baits ready to run.
Mi casa for the week. What you can't see is the new and improved eggcrate busted out from college days in order to ease the morning sore neck and back pains...
And as usual, I would wander off into the dunes to take shots for the females out there.
And it was peaceful up on the dune, watching the sun set and the birds sit undisturbed down in this slough. But I'll never get used to the wind turbines in the view...
The results? Didn't turn a click either night. The outcome? I'm still getting an awesome 38% property tax increase, but at least I got to go fishing and pretend I don't have to shell out $333 a month to a city who had 15 million for a waterspray park downtown but not enough to meet the road budget for the year. But I'm glad summer is winding down, the redfish run is coming, the mullet migration will go into full effect, and before we know it the pomps will be here and playing mayhem on us as we lazy fish from the front of the truck! The temps will eventually start dropping, and who knows? Maybe it will rain again in Corpus Christi! Wonder what rain is appraised at these days?
Till next time, over and out. _________________ Protect Padre at all costs for future generations to use and enjoy and never forget our freedoms aren't free.

Thanks for the report and great pics! I was out on bob hall the night(or morning) that Albert caught the monster tiger. I was the guy in the middle of the t head. I'm trying to put faces to the people on this great site so I'm trying to figure out which one you were. I'm somewhat new to corpus fishing but not to the salt. Anyways thanks again for the great pics and I hope to see everyone again soon! _________________ Rick

Towboat,
Was nice meeting you.
I think i had just swum a big skipjack out when you came by. Well I got ready to reel in later that evening and head back to the roughing accommodations of Hawthorn and got it in from out past the last bar to realize that the 280lb steel leader had been bitten in half... It was a 3foot steel with 12 ft of heavy mono and the 3 ft section was down to 18"... Never turned a click, but the line did go slack about an hour after you left.
Thursday night the little sharks invaded, had out a bunch of live mullet and live whiting and they just got shredded about the last 2hrs before dark. That afternoon in the huge masses of mullet I could see reds swimming along with them, nothing worked to catch one...
The fishing sucked... But it was better than being at work... |

I was the guy with the blonde girl with me. Somehow...she distracted my fishing time!
Looking forward to it Ralph! You need some beach time soon!
SaintGunner, pretty wild getting a leader bitten in half eh? Thanks for the update. Water has looked so much better all summer it seems in the area you were fishing! Strange how those reds won't take a nice fat mullet sometimes....I had to switch to cut skipjack last month, and they would most definetely take that! _________________ Protect Padre at all costs for future generations to use and enjoy and never forget our freedoms aren't free.

| Its not just your county. Ours went up $42k this year in Williamson and we are livid. We wasted our time protesting it as well. They keep 'comping' our house with this four year old, white limestone with granite everything and solid wood cabinets with vaulted ceilings to our built in the mid-70is with formica counter tops(original), falling apart cabinets and just other stuff needing fixed. When we called them on what homes are actually selling for, he just shrugged. Then we asked how can you compare our home to the previously mentioned one and he said "What does granite countertops really add to the price of the home." My favorite one was when I told him comps were B.S. he said that is all they have to go by as they don't actually go and appriase the houses in person. I said you used too and now you are all a bunch of thieves. We were pretty much done at that point. I told him to find me a buyer for my home at what they say its worth and I will sell it to them today. They know they are full of it. |

Times 10! Still wondering how that food came out so good!!
Mudflap you are a man after my own heart. Taxes are one thing but what's going on around my neck of the woods and yours is another! _________________ Protect Padre at all costs for future generations to use and enjoy and never forget our freedoms aren't free.
