LONG POST; Sorry, but I need help!!

As I said in the title, I want to buy a great new or used Shallow Sport, but I DON'T KNOW which model to get?? I am a boat neophyte; I have never owned one. I use kayaks at this time, but would like to upgrade.

Below is an e-mail I sent to Jerry at Gulf Coast Marine in Corpus Christi, Texas; it explains what I am looking for and want to do. Which of there boats do you think will best cover my needs. I will appreciate your thoughts and suggestions:

Jerry,

I enjoyed talking with you and definitely need some knowledgeable help with this. Your company is long in business with a good reputation and good reviews, so that is what I expect of you. I am a boat novice, as they say, with a capital N.

My name is Ray Emerson, and I live in Waco, Texas. I fish Lake Waco, the Brazos and Colorado Rivers, along with the flats and bays around Aransas Pass, Port Aransas, and up and down PINS. I am a master of none, but I do have a blast, and I also have four young grandchildren, three girls and one boy, who I'm trying to train to come along with me for kayaking, fishing, backpacking, fishing, etc. They are learning and doing well so far, but I want to take them and their parents to the coast some, and a good boat would certainly help that cause. Of course, I'd like to be able to use it around Waco, too, if it would fit those conditions, which I thought one of these would. I would have to depend on you for advice on that.

I know ZERO about boats and have never owned one. I need simple, great quality with dependability, and affordability!!

I do know about kayaks, but they can only get you so far. I'm in the process of trying to learn a little about mostly shallow water boasts, and have checked out Majek, Tran Sport, SouthShore, El Pescador (which I first saw in Aransas Pass and fell in love with), and Shallow Sport boats.

After looking online and reading, I decided that the Shallow Sport Classic, http://www.shallowsportboats.com/boats/classic/24-classic/, might be a good fit if I could find a length and price I could afford. They appear to have a tremendous background and history in engineering and boat building, facts that impressed me and I really admire. Since I know nothing about these beauties, I thought buying from a company and dealer with great histories would be the smartest path for me to follow.

I checked their dealerships and saw your business and name, so here I am. I would like information on the Shallow Sport Classic sizes. I will never be carrying a big load of people, probably 5 to 6 at most, and most likely only 3 or 4 at most. I would like to be able to use the boat on rivers and lakes, along with the coastal flats, canals, and hopefully be able to travel a little way out in the Gulf along the shoreline up and down PINS. It would also be great if I could load from 1 to 3 kayaks on board to be hauled with me.

I realize these Classic models aren't meant for way out in the Gulf, and I don't want to go there, but I would like to run beyond the breakers and maybe up to a mile out in good weather. Can the Shallow Sport Classic do that at least? We paddle out up to 3, 4, and sometimes 5+ miles in our kayaks. I didn't know how stable these Classic flat boats are offshore with the wave action in the Gulf.

I would appreciate any information you can give me about the brand, models, costs, accessories, financing, capabilities, insurance, and all else I need to know. I would like to get a boat that will last; I take great care of all I have.

I would love to buy a brand new, 24', loaded Shallow Sport Classic, but I have to be able to afford and pay for whatever I get, so I can be interested in both new or used or shorter and smaller, but whatever I get has got to be in great shape. I do not what a heap that needs a lot of work, a money pit!

And, its got to be able to be pulled behind a Jeep Rubicon.

I appreciate your help and hope that we can eventually work together on this. I look forward to hearing from you.

I do make trips to Corpus and need to bring some PENN reels to Roy's for maintenance a little later this summer, along with picking up some refurbished Harnell rods from Steve Honc', so I'll be down there in a few weeks.

Thanks!!!

Ray

After looking at the Shallow Sport site, they have a ton of boat models, each of which has its own advantages and disadvantages problably, so I came away a little more confused. They have a long history of engineering and boat construction, http://www.shallowsportboats.com/about/history/, which made me believe they know what they are doing, but I could decide which model would do best as a combination boat on both fresh- and saltwater; Lake Waco, the Brazos and Colorado Rivers, along with the flats and bays around Aransas Pass, Port Aransas, and up and down PINS.

As I said above, I will appreciate your thoughts and suggestions. I only need one boat and I'd like it to perform several jobs well, provided I can find one model that will do that. I thought I would recruit you all in a combined, mutual effort to get me in the RIGHT boat!

Thanks, guys!!!

Ray

Thats a tough one, and I have been there. From my experience you either buy a boat thats awesome at one thing, or one thats ok at a few things. The one thats ok at a few things tended to bug me alot .

My take would be a 21 ShallowSport with sides, if thats the brand your looking for.

From what you discribe the 21 with sides would be your best fit. If you want to get out and wade then I would choose the Classic. A nice little combination is the Sprint or Bahai, not the scooter but the sides are low and it is still easy to get into and out of. Of these models the 21 is the most $$.
Call Wes Hudson at Shallowsport, he is the owner, he will be able to inform you best on hwat fits your needs. He can also help you customise your boat and work with the dealer in your area.
Good luck, they are great boats. I've had mine for 21 yrs now.

if your grandchildren are young i would probably go for the one with sides. I have a scooter and I love it but some people dont like the idea of getting on a boat with no sides..
