Its a great concept but being exempt if born before 1993 is quite silly. "Most" boat owners are older than 18 and still cannot drive a boat!

I had to go through this in South Florida when i was a kid. In order to drive my whaler I was required to go through some coast guard class and some Florida license for kids. I had a 11 year old buddy with a 20 foot angler! He knew how to drive it better than many adult boat owners. Now that was crazy.

I think it would be a good thing. Sure would be a lot more courteous boat drivers out there with just a little bit of education.

not going to read the article but just another money maker for the state. Next will be cops in boats hiding with radar guns to get you for speeding or failure to drive your boat straight. Just like the fishing license. You can buy the license but still can't fish unless you buy fresh or saltwater stamps. The gov is getting out of control with our money.

already happening in Freeport...not so much for speeding, but city cops having a boat to issue boating safety tickets...

from another forum:

Quote:
Anyone here besides me think that it is BullShziit that the Freeport Police are now writing tickets along the ICW for boating safety. I thought the Coasties have done a heck of a job as the safety police.
Coasties write a ticket it goes to the State
Freeport Cops write a ticket it goes to Freeport(hmmm wonder why they bought that boat)

This is bull! If you guys in Freeport were about public safety go higher lifeguards. Last time I checked more People have drowned on the beaches then by boating. But that dont create revenue on the back of honest fishermen!

By the way Freeport is going to have a judge and nurse this week at the Coast Guard Station taking blood from anyone the Freeport Cop boat thinks have been drinking. They pull everyone over along the ICW for no reason. No probable cause nothing just to do it! They are looking for revenue! Don't spend your money in Freeport go somewhere else. This Tears me up!

In Ft lauderdale fl there are broward county sheriffs and they have radar guns the speed limit is 25mph on the icw... And they have them on the gulf side too which isn't nearly as congested... It will happen in time if there are more and more boaters and boating accidents.

Dude....................... anyone who drives on the road is required to have a license and that hasn't made them courteous!!! Rolling Eyes

Be careful what you wish for my friend. We don't need more government intrusion in our lives. Just as with every other aspect of our society, all that's needed here is vigorous and swift enforcement of the laws now on the books! Wink
