Had one of those pterodactyls hanging overhead yesterday afternoon right off Pita. Very early to see them around.....

Great treat to see them! We saw one being being harassed by some gulls at the west end of the causeway a month or two ago (must have stolen some food). Have also seen them up by Shamrock.

I had one make a serious dive on a Cordell broken back near Penasco Point (SP?). I thought there was going to be a mess, but it broke off the dive about 10 yards above the water and whent back up stairs.

What can they be hunting?

Actually, I think it is pretty common to see them this time of year. I saw three in Aransas bay in April last year. They were actually sitting on the channel markers and spooked when I paddled by. Magnificent birdies.

Cool birds. They usually visit us during the summer as the currents bring them up from the Yucatan(sp?). The females are the primary hunters and it is neat to see them in pairs or greater numbers. Nice pic!
It is really neat to see them dive on the gulls and others when attempting to knock them or whatever the other birds happen to be carrying out of the sky.

Here is a pic I took when hand feeding a Frigate from the kayak about a mile offshore...

Oz, that's a great picture. Looking at the beak and the talons, the frigate looks more related to the raptor family than the pelican family.

Cool pics, guys. I had three at the house yesterday and saw four more on Laguna Shores coming home from work. They will come inshore whenever there is a storm out in the Gulf. Strangely enough, I have seen them maybe half a dozen times this year already when the Gulf was perfectly quiet. Best way of explaining it is "Birds do what birds do".

awesome pic Ozzie!

we were in Punta Mita back in February and there are lots of those guys (and gals) out there. The boys kept asking me "what do frigates eat?" I told them that they are aerial pirates and steal fish/food from other birds. on the last day we were there, Augs and I walked out onto the balcony just in time to witness one frigate bird swoop down, peck at another frigate to get him to drop a fish, then swoop under the other frigate and steal the fish!

no honor among aerial pirates it seems!
