I have a pipe that has broken outside my house. Its an external line coming from my house going to an outside shower, hose reel and faucet. It broke just at the point it enters the ground.

So, does anyone have a good reccomendation?

Sounds like a pretty easy, inexpensive fix. I would give it a try myself especially w/ the cost of having a pro come out.

Just remember the first rule of plumbing, which just so happens to be applicable to many other aspects of life. $hit flows down hill.

repair it with PEX... HD carries all the sharkbites that can connect various materials together. not cheap connectors, but hold up to just about any condition better than most. the pex is cheap but only issue is UV..but that takes a long time to cause pin holes.

This is what I am working with. I can turn the water off to this line so it is no real emergency for me. Id like to try and fix it myself, I figure if I screw it up then I can call the plumber, if not then I learned something and saved some dough!

Is it threaded into the PVC? Is there a bonding agent in the threads at the upper coupling? Suggestions?

Iron to pvc not a good combination. I'd just cut it all out to the ground and go back with all pvc pipe including the valve.

I agree w/ Bluffer (go all PVC) and like you said, if you screw it up you can always call a plumber. If you fix it right, you've taught yourself a new skill and saved some dough.

Final Outcome.. For what its worth.

I cut the damaged pipe and unscrewed the lower half from teh PVC, No problem. I took a wire brus and started cleaning the upper fittings to ease the removal, as i did this the jostling actually caused some leaks above the shut off valve caused by pitting corrosion (I work on helo's that routinely hover over salt water... i can tell you about 12 different types of corrosion).

Anyway the leaks were tiny enough that they werent a huge deal, but in a place that if they became worse would involve having to get to the interior line coming out of the wall (drywall work and/or siding removal)

long story short version... james from "Ocean Plumbing" (on the bluff) was awesome.. Did the work for a very reasonable price, explained everything in detail and took care of it on very short notice.

Thanks for all your reccomendations!

Based on your experience with Ocean Plumbing, I called James and had him do some plumbing work at my house. Very professional, very efficient and very reasonable. Thanks for the heads up!!
