Winds died a little late this morning so I tried to take advantage of the window between then and the arrival of the front. Wasn't sure when the front would hit so stayed close to home.

Water in the ULM was chocolate for the most part. When I first got on the water it was a 2 sock drift. By the time I made my last couple of drifts it was a no sock day. Knew that meant the impending cold front was near. There were fish there but I had to work hard to catch some on lures. If I had bait I'm sure I would have gotten more. I did wind up with 4 trout between 15"-19" and a 24" red. All released and no pics. Two of the trout were caught on a glow/Char trailer I had under my topwater. The red hit the topwater. The other 2 trout, both in the 19" range were caught on a rootbeer shrimptail hooked weedless/weightless and attached to a salt shaker. On one of the retrieves I feel a tap and go to set the hook and for 2-3 seconds there is no movement at all. Then a small shake and whatever hit was gone. When I bring in my lure the weed guard is still over the hook so I think that whatever hit, hit the saltshaker itself and didn't get caught by the small hook I have attached to it.

30 min after I got home the winds started howling from the north.

I looked out my office window and saw that little break in the winds, and sighed realizing that it was the only break we are going to see until at least thursday. So have you been reading texas saltwater fishing lately zia? There was an article about the topwater-jighead-trailer and getting stubborn fish to bite, and thought to myself...hmmm. Interesting. Going to try it? Probably not..but interesting.

good idea. I always thought about putting a hook on my alameda floats (when I use them) because invariably, at least a couple times a season, either a trout or a dumb red will come up and hit the cork.

its fun and interesting but the hook ratio is zero, LOL. would be cool to hook something in that fashion.

I've done that on my maulers before, porkfetus. It seems like in the spring the trout will hit the orange float. Haven't done it in years. Don't know why I stopped.

David Sikes also had mentioned on Sun. about topwaters and trailers. I've had lots of success doing it. Kind of a take-off on fly fishing where you have a nymph trailing a dry.

Yes! I thought about doing the trailer on topwaters in the surf for when you get those tail slappers. Dad told me to throw a bass assassin in back at the fish. Another friend has tried the topwater/trailer soft plastic in the surf and says it works. Sort of like a more realistic popping cork setup to me. Maybe a chugger type or popper topwater with trailing soft plastic would be da bomb!

attach a weedles wide gap 5\0 on the rear hook, mono leader or just 1 or 2 splitrings remove the trebles on you topdog or skitterwalk and rig a bassassian texas style and your totally weedlees.ive used this in the surf for ladyfish when the sargassam is thick.you will miss fish but its a lot better than dealing with the weed.

That's about right. Instead of a non catching cork, use a topwater instead. Plus you work 2 different parts of the water table. I attach about 18 of florocarbon to the front hook. I've tried the back but on the front the action isn't changed as drastically. It doesn't pull the back of the plug down making it easier to walk the dog.

Along the same line, if I'm using bait on the bottom, instead of using a 1 oz chunk of lead I will use a 3/4 oz lead head with a soft plastic as my weight. Many times when you're reeling in a fish the dangling lure will attract another fish.

Also, when I'm catching a lot of dink trout I'll tie on two soft plastics like a spec rig. When I catch a dink I play it a while and I don't know how many times I've had a keeper trout come up and hit the other lure. The biggest I caught this way was two 20" trout at the same time. What a blast that was.

I read about the same setup in a Mike McBride article. One of the guys changed to that trailing rig on a topwater. He called it Matagorda something. By the end of the day they were all using the method after laugbing at it in the beginning. It must work.

I remember reading a TIDE magazine a long time ago that said Florida guides often attached hooks to their corks in order to catch those fish who insisted on eating them.
