Coastas by far, Maui Jim is real good too (I got both) - had to do a bunch of investigating on this subject - you need good protection coaching in the sun _________________ Happy Hook'n

This comes up every few months and I repeat: I've owned Maui Jim's, Sun Cloud, Bolle' and many others that I don't remember, all in glass because plastic sucks for staying clear and haze free. Out of all of these the best value IMHO is from Academy. Their brand is Magellan, and you can get glass, mirrored, polarized shades that work VERY well for fishing for $70.
They are every bit as good in every detail as my $180 Maui Jim's!!! _________________ Dave

I posted the same question a few months ago. What I would have liked to have seen was an independant comparison, side by side with test patterns in a controlled environment to see if one set of lens is superior over another. I never found such a comparison. The closest I can come to that is something I did at Academy.
I compare my prescription polarized glasses against some Bolles and Costas by looking at the glare on the floor to see which of the 3 blocked it the best. The results were that my polarized sunglasses were the worst. The Bolles beat out the Costas by a small margin. Just to be sure, I asked the salesperson and my wife to make the same comparison. All 3 of us agreed that the Bolles were slightly better.
With that said, I don't want to lose sight of the fact that we are going to use the glasses on the water and not to be looking at the floor at some department store. From what I understand after asking many, many eye doctors, is that there is no superior technology. All of them use the same basic technology.
I got a pair of prescriptions Costas (that's the only quality brand my eye doctor had). The lens are genuine Costa del Mar lens. They are good, but they are not leaps and bounds above all others.
Hope that helps,

I have owned a bunch of Oakleys and have a new set of Pro M-Frames with three different lenses for sale on CL here in Corpus. I only used them at the shooting range. If anyone interested. Will trade for some yak gear. I have my favorites they are the Oakley Radar Path Polarized Sunglasses in Positive Red.
It really depends what you plan to use them for... If you just use them to fish a couple of hours I would say get the Costas. If you are like me and don't take them off all day or always in motion... flying down the ICW to your favorit spot or on a yak you need all the coverage that Oakley provides and the 180 degrees of view to stay alive. The Costas that I think are better have large legs that block your peripheral view. I really would like me some Costas Fisch in a silver frame with a 580P mirror green lens but it has not come out yet. Now those would be sweet.
One more thing Oakleys stay put without having to strap them to your head with there unobtainium sleevs and nose pads. Something to think about... _________________ <%\FLOUNDER{| Fever |

I've owned about 3-5 pairs of Oakleys all Pro M frames except for a pair of Zeros which were discontinued . The last pair of shades I owned was a pair of polarized Ray Bans that hurt my eyes when I wore them, and they had a red case to boot. Out of all those I think the Zeros fit the best, but I left them in a buddys truck and never got them back. _________________ I plead the fifth |

Do yourself a big favor and go to Academy, try the expensive brands and then the Magellan, and see what you think. You can get a good idea of glare reduction even in a store by looking at the lights, reflections on the floor, etc. Compare and then tell us what you chose. _________________ Dave

I would say costa's
I have own Bolle's Love Oakleys.. but the 580lens is awesome. dont get the poly, get the glass..
The reason that I would recomend Costa's is the frame selection and lenses.
Just because I have them and love them, the application of the frame and the lenses and make or break if they work for you.
Some of my oakleys would fly off with the wind or me getting bumped around,
Some of the costa frames block vision and just dont fit right.
If you cant see what you are doing I dont care how awesome the lenses are.. that even goes for costas..
But for glare, clarity and the lense and frame I chose they are right for me.. oh and always carry a cheap pair of glasses for times that you dont want an expensive pair to get messed up. _________________ Fish and Hunt Baby.... so tight lines and clear scopes. |

I have gone through a lot of them. I own a set of costas with the blue mirror, but they are wire frame glasses. I like them but they are less comfortable and more dressy than I like while fishing. Lately the wife has adopted them. Got them at sierratradingpost.com for around $60 I think, normally $200ish.
I also have tried both Columbia, as well as a few Magellans at Academy. The Columbia were junk, the lens coating started to flake within a month. Magellan lenses were decent but the hinges seemed prone to breaking. I have a few pairs in pieces now.
The ones that are by far my favorites are the Natives with their "blue reflex" lenses. Native and Costa are the same company and made in the same factory. I cannot tell a difference in their blue reflective polarized lenses, at least the polycarbonate ones.
To me, the Natives are more comfortable, lighter, and have easy to swap lenses (I have both blue reflective gray and amber). The only downside is that because the lenses can be easily popped out to swap, you have to be careful when you wipe them down or it might pop a lens. It doesn't happen while wearing them. Plus the warranty is excellent. First pair is usually free, even if its your fault, after that its like a $30 flat fee. Just send them the pieces
Also, you can find closeouts pretty often on Natives. Sierratradingpost.com is a good place to look, they are usually marked down and have coupons for 20% more if you sign up for email (they will spam you so send to a junk account). But their inventory is usually last years models and changes daily.
BUT, here is a deal I just found if you like Natives. I bought a backup pair. I think it comes with some amber polarized lenses too (mine did).
http://www.amazon.com/Native-Eyewear-Iron-Reflex-Gray/dp/B00265JMXS
Thats a great deal on a great set. I'm tempted to buy another pair

| The tinted polorized layer on Costas 580 lens is sandwiched between two layers of glass, making the sunblocking component impossible to remove or scratch off. |
