Because of the quakes and sunamis I decided to do a quick study on things that last a long time such as food in a can. They are Spam, Dinty Moore beef stew, tuna, and believe it or not ...honey. Spam can last up to 10 or more years, tuna about 5 years, honey will last forever if un opened due to lack of protiens. I was surprized at the cost of mre packaged foods. I have not yet studied anything on bottled water, that is next. Just food for thought..... Very Happy

IMS, how long does an unopened bottle of Capt.'s Reserve last? That is the question you should be asking yourself.....

it would be the first thing to be consumed. The spam would still be sitting there. And it's Capt. Morgan's private stock. Very Happy

Those things aren't good to start with so it's impossible for them to go bad. Very Happy

Vienna Sausage is the first thing that comes to mind, although one of my coworkers once shared a story where he opened a can of these bad boys. Explosion ensued. Obviously spoiled.....BOOM....all over the place...not a nice sight....or smell. Shocked

I've heard that whiskey doesn't get any better with age once it's in the bottle. However, when I was a senior in high school in 1966, a good friend of mine was looking through his dad's war chest from 1945. In it, he found an unopened fifth of Old Crow. We figured he wouldn't miss a little of it, and proceeded to do a taste test. Well, I'll tell you that was the smoothest whiskey I've ever had. Either whiskey does get better in the bottle with age, or Old Crow used to be a lot better than it is now.

I don't plan on having 'things that last' and depending on them. Every 6 months, I stock a 'bug out box' with enough canned food and several gallons of distilled water, eye glasses, medical crap, contact lenses, etc. to last my wife and I two months. I also have other things in it like iodine for purifying water, etc.

I buy stuff that we actually want to eat, so that we don't have to throw stuff out, we just eat it and continually restock it.
