SFCCI "Spring Fling" Casting Tournament March 12th & 13th 2011
This was SFCCI's first tournament of the year and after a long cold and wet winter we were all looking forward to it. I had gotten word that Tommy Farmer and wife Kim were coming from NC and attending our tournament. The weather forecast was calling for some nice weather and strong winds. Arrived at Richard Kleberg Park on Saturday morning to setup the field and got everything ready. Winds started off at 16 MPH picking up to 27 MPH and with gusts up to 36 MPH. Humidity was at 73% with the lowest being 48%. Nice and sunny warming up to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. The weights being thrown on Saturday were the 150 gram and the 175 gram weights. From the start of the first round of casting it was proving that it was definitely going to be a great day of casting. By lunch time, the weather was absolutely beautiful with blue skies and strong winds. Late afternoon and we already had 6 PB (Personal Best) distances for the 8 casters. To make the day even better, Tommy Farmer was able to break the US Record on the 150 gram weight not only once but several times. The first distance recorded was 840.4 feet (256.1 Meters) and the latter being 859.52 feet (261.9 Meters), which is now the current US record. With a quick check on the line and shock diameter for being compliant, Tommy was on cloud nine. After many rounds later we were finally able to wrap up and finish the day on some high notes. David Womack, Jack Rice, Gary Palmejar, Rene Ruiz and Tommy Farmer were the ones who ended up with PB’s for the day. Discussing the day’s events afterwards with Tommy, he dedicated his 150 gram record of 859.52 feet to Jerry Valentine, a friend and fellow caster from Crystal Beach Texas who was sorely missed at this tournament. Jerry is currently battling cancer and we pray and wish him and his family the best.
After some much needed rest from Saturday, we slowly start arriving on Sunday to get ready for the day’s event. The weights being thrown on Sunday were the 100 gram and 125 gram weights. The winds started off a bit slower at 6 MPH and quickly built up to 24 MPH with gusts up to 32 MPH. Humidity was at 90% and dropped to as low as 65%. It was real cloudy for the day with no sign of sunshine and the temperature reaching 76 degrees Fahrenheit. We had a total of 7 casters for the day and there were no signs of these guys slowing down at all. It was proving to be an Epic weekend for the casters. Tommy Farmer was able to break another US Record on the 125 gram weight with a cast of 841.20 feet (256.3 Meters). The bar was definitely being set high by Tommy with two US Records on two different weights. Cliff McKay, Rene Ruiz, David Womack, Rudy Ramirez, Jack Rice and Tommy Farmer all had PB’s on Sunday’s weights and a big congrats to them on a job well done. We finally finished the day with plenty of pictures, handshakes, hugs and laughter.
I would like to thank all who helped out and all of the sponsors of SFCCI. Special thanks to Susan Ivy with Richard Kleberg Park for allowing us the use of the field in Kingsville, TX. Nick Meyer with Breakway USA and Ultima Line, Jack Rice with Texaloy Foundry, Cliff McKay with Mckay Surveying are our dedicated sponsors which make each tournament possible. It was great seeing good friends close and near again. Thanks to all who came out and look forward to the next tournament in June.

Awesome! Nice casting Rudy and of course congrats to Tommy, Gary and Carlos for some killer casting. A rotator cuff issue and lack of talent prevented me from competing this year |
