Im thinking about getting into fly fishing down here. Does anyone on this site ever go out around here with a fly rod? If so I would like to talk about the correct equipment and of course anything you else that could help me out. Thanks in advance

YES!!! Lots of folks flyfish for reds and trout on the flats. I know lots of folks carry their flyrods on the beach. I wouldn't carry anything lighter than an 8wt on the coast. I know many carry 10 wt or bigger for the surf and 7/8wt for the bays. I use an 8wt and I use it in the bay.

If you are interested in getting started, I have a 8wt 2pc 9' custom wrapped flyrod with a Redington AS 7/8 in gold anodized finish (for saltwater) in excellent condition with fairly new SA Headstart 8wt line on new dacron backing in a Cabela's single flyrod/reel case for sale. I have it on Craigslist for $200. All totaled up at retail costs, the outfit priced out at over $400. If you are interested, let me know and I will send you some pics.

excellent choice my friend. practice practice the better you can cast(accuracy) the better the catchin. you are entering a life long affliction

If you stop by Jerry B's on SPID ask for Capt. Harris Ashley, He is a very avid fly fisherman along with being a TP&W / USCG certified. Great guy and very very knowledgeable.

Check into a guided trip with Billy Sandifer, he can teach you like no other can how to fly fish on the beach.

I will add Capt Dean "Slowride" Thomas if you wanna chase tails in the flats from a kayak. Dean fishes both conventional artificials and flies. He also sells TFO rods (very nice) and flies from his kayak rental and guide service business in Aransas Pass. If you want to go from a poled skiff, contact Capt Billy Trimble in Aransas Pass/Austin. He is also a great flyfisher & ties some great flies. His wife Stacey is a FFF certified casting instructor.

If you want to take some casting lessons, contact Bill Harvey in Port Lavaca at the Calhoun County Extension office. He does weekend long seminars in Ingleside several times a year. He is FFF certified and a marine biologist that we will teach you how to cast and how to chase redfish too. He is very very good. I have taken one of his classes and it helped a great deal.

You may also want to check out TPWD's Flat Out Fishing Expo at TAMU-CC coming up soon. They usually have some of the aboved mentioned folks doing casting lessons, fly-tying demos, and lectures.

good luck and welcome to the addiction!!! I had to give it up for the most part because of tendonitis. I still use a 4wt rod to chase white bass, winter rainbows, river bass, etc in the hill country streams and rivers ...
