| It seems that most of TX, including Corpus, is going to be subjected to rolling power outages of 15-45 minutes at a time. Too much power being used by people trying to stay warm is putting strain on the electric grid. Those who are lucky enough to have fireplaces might want to be sure to have a stockpile of firewood. If we get an ice storm, power lines may come down and leave people without electricity for hours or days. just a heads up..... |

I hope that y'all get spared the ice. We get a BAD ice storm up here every 5-10 years and we're overdue now. The last time we had one, the whole neighborhood looked like a war zone: all of the breaking tree limbs sounded like artillery fire for days after, and of course many power lines that hadn't ALREADY come down from the weight of the ice were then brought down by the breaking limbs!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Last time this happened we were TOTALLY without power for four days, but some folks didn't have power for WEEKS!!!!! _________________ Dave

We are experiencing those rolling outages here in San Antonio also. In over 60 years living in this city this is the first time I remember this happening. First outage here at the shop this morning was almost exactally one hour. _________________ Big Ed

Dave wasnt that the winter of 2000 ~ 2001. We lived out in Chenal and the white pines popping in 1/2 all night those first two nights was CRAZY. Our neighbor actually got out and slowly backed his truck into the trees he could get into. When I asked him why he was doing it he looked back at me with a 9 mile stare and slowly said, "if one of these SOB's is going to fall through my roof it isnt going to be some ramdom 10 seconds of terror. it is going to be on my terms."
I went back into the garage poured another drink and got a lawn chair. |

Same here in the Fort Hood/Copperas Cove area, power on and off.
It was out for 3 hrs this morning, the fireplace comes in handy during a power outage. I help my neighbors light up their chimney and made sure they had plenty of firewood. They're both in their 80's. |

The power issues don't really have to do with people trying to stay warm, but they are weather related. Winter months are low usage and certain plants are taken offline. Take a lean running system and add in some unforeseen failures:
| Quote: | Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst said late this morning that a broken pipe and a frozen pipe at two Central Texas electric generating plants helped trigger a statewide power emergency that forced rolling blackouts in Austin and across Texas.
Dewhurst said problems at the Luminant-owned Oak Grove plant east of Temple and the Sandow plant near Rockdale apparently were caused by a winter storm that has dropped temperatures to below freezing across the state, and stalled activity in some parts of North Texas with blizzard-like conditions.
At the same time as the two plants were down early today, Dewhurst said other power plants were off-line from Texas’ utility grid, and pressure drops in natural gas supply lines caused by the freezing temperatures were causing problems at other plants.
“This should not happen,” Dewhurst told reporters, noting that the state’s peak generating capacity is far above what Texans were using this morning. But when the additional plants had to be taken off-line, he said, officials who manage the state’s electric-grid at 5:20 a.m. ordered reductions to make up for that loss.
Three notices totalling 4,000 megawatts have been issued to reduce demand,” he said. “I understand about 3,000 megawatts have been backed down so far.”
He said the rolling blackouts, which affected various Austin neighborhoods during the morning rush along with other parts of the state, would probably continue until some of the power plants can be brought back on-line.
For his part, Dewhurst said he wife “calls me and chews on me” about her power being out in Houston, and Senate Finance Committee Chairman Steve Ogden, R-Bryan, got a call from his wife out outages in his hometown, as well. |

You be running a bit behind this evening. Canadian whiskey and diet sprite tonight. Canadian for respect of the cold weather. _________________

Take any generator, or substation that runs normal stuff on a regular basis. Now add 1 million heat producing items to that power producing station and it will bogg down.
Now as for creating your own blackouts through rum and such. As long as they don't last for more than 24 hours you should be ok. When they start lasting for 3 -4 days and you wake up in the back seat of a Las Vegas taxi, and you started drinking in Flourbluff, then there may be a slight problemo. _________________ I LIKE MINE FRIED. |

Just as with all "green" power (can you say ethanol?) the cost:power output/price ratio just isn't realistic, and won't be for many a moon. _________________ Dave

Mr. Dewhurst wants to get rid of all Texas Lignite Plants. These two that went down were just put into operation last year. He gets rid of them all, we better get BIGGER FIREPLACES...... |
