| 20lb fluorocarbon good enough for leaders on 15 lb test using penn baitcasters ( longbeach, and senators, 10 ft poles)? thank ya'll. i ask many of the same questions year to year but i forget (mainly due to chemo). also i don't get down to the beach that much any more. this will be my first trip in 3 yrs. july 1st was the 2 year anniversary of my bone marrow transplant and being cancer free. I can't wait for this trip! My high school buddies are fishing in the sharkathon, i'm not. just hoping to catch some reds, whitings and relax.....thank yall again... |

Congrats on you successful BMT, that's great to here!
I have a BIL who has been fighting multiple myeoloma for 10 year, has had TWO stem cell transplants, and has been on chemo for most of that time, and his numbers are rising again. The docs tell him that without another stem cell transplant he may have a year, but the last one almost killed him!
FWIW from my end, I use fluoro leaders and find that you really have to tie good knots, the fluoro isn't tolerant of sloppy knot tying and some knots and IMHO isn't as strong in knot strength as the = weight mono. Having said that, it's ability to almost disappear underwater means that you can use a heavier weight leader without spooking fish, and it's heavier than mono so it sinks faster, which is great when free lining live bait. _________________ Dave

Well surf casting weights over 2oz could snap that 15# main line. 40# regular mono shock leader tied to the 15# main line would prevent breaks. Usually I like to get five wraps of leader on the spool plus the length of the rod plus 1/2 the length of rod.15 feet of leader or so should work for those 10' rods. then u could just Carolina rig with that shock leader. Maybe a 4oz egg weight, bead, swivel, 2' 40# mono, 5/0 circle hook, finger mullet. You would be set for reds n whitting on that rig. If water is rough replace the egg weight with surf weight. Use a clear color mono. This will save you some bucks on that expensive flouro line. The 20# flouro would be better used for lure or freeline bait fishing.
Heres the link to breakaway better explaning the shock leader.

Heres how to attach the shock leader to your main line with a uni knot. Dont blob your knot for fishing. Also from Breakawayusa.com.
Carolina rig
