How far out do you yak your bait out to shark fish in the surf?

It all depends how big of a reel you have. I'v caught sharks 20 feet off the bank. I have a 9 ot and usually run mine out about 400 hundred yards give or take alittle. Smaller reels second or third gut is plenty.

Yep, there's a fellow who caught a big tiger shark in about 2 1/2 foot of water in the wade gut once. I have seen 8 foot plus bulls "beach" themselves on the first bar chasing bait fish, and have plenty of big toothies swim past me in shallow water, so they are in all depths. Typically the bigger ones do stay out further. Most I know yak and drop in the deepe water just past the third bar.

we usually run several baits out to different distances until we get a run. Then we move most of the baits to that distance. First bait usually goes on the backside of the second bar.

I find it interesting that the sharks come in closer at night.
sound like a lot of fun.

Don't be fooled by their closeness to shore at night. They are there in the day too, you just don't always see them. It's always important to keep an eye out for them whether in knee deep or chest deep water whatever the time of day. Good luck with you shark fishing and make sure to give us a report afterwards.
