Caller Times Outdoor Editor/writer, David Sikes is a buddy of mine and usually at least once a year he invites me to go on a fishing outing that becomes a story in the paper. Well this Monday was it and it was an offshore trip out of Port Aransas aboard the "All Good" a 43' Mikelson sport fisher, captained this day by Jim Harmon, also on board for captain and deck hand duties was Andy Eccleston.

Also on board Ron Henry Strait, former Outdoors Editor for the San Antonio Express News, and area guide, Captain Scott Nixon.

We headed out just after 6 am and began fishing after a short run of 18 or so miles near a shrimp boat that was still pulling gear. We tried some bonito strips in the drift area behind but had no takers.

Then we picked off some Chicken Dolphin - small Mahi Mahi that were gathered near a large tree limb. The action was fast and furious so I skipped the photos until David Sikes picked up this small King Mackerel.

Then it was off a few miles more to fish under a Shrimp Boat.

David hooked up with a Little Tunny also called a "Bonito" and then I fought a large Jack Crevalle which we eventually brought in.

Then it was further offshore to trade for some bycatch.

Here is Captain Scott Nixon enjoying the view now close to 30 miles offshore.

We then retired to the comfortable air conditioned salon as we headed further offshore to fish an offshore rig for some trolling.

Ron is hooked up as a fish darted out from the shadow of the rig and ate one of the trolled lures.

Nice Barracuda!

Nothing else hit so we cruised to a rip and trolled near a patch of sargassum where we got into more small Mahi Mahis which we caught on trout rods.

The camera doesn't do it justice (no polarized filter) but if you look carefully you can see other mahis under the boat. We caught many here including some 5 lbers.

Then it was off to another area to pick up more species because the goal was to get as many species, other than Red Snapper since the season is closed to show David's readers that there are plenty of other "fish in the sea" to catch.

At this spot we chummed with some bycatch and Captain Scott hooked up this Bonito.

Then I dropped a ribbon back into the fray and got a 10lb plus Mahi. More mahis, and King Mackerel followed and David picked up a legal Amberjack. It was fast and furious so no pictures - David will have lots of better photos when the article comes out. It was nonstop action and one of the best offshore outings I have ever been on in the Gulf of Mexico or anywhere.

Here is another shot of the All Good as we unloaded our fish.

That translated into this.

and of course this.

Thanks again to Captains Harmon and Eccleston, my friend, David Sikes, and new friends, Ron Strait and Captain Scott Nixon. It was epic and I am feeling my age after processing the fish.

I thought so too but when you mention a mahi haul, you suddenly have a lot of friends Smile Going to definitely send some with Kym for her and Rob in exchange for the cool TIFT t-shirts they gave us!

David Sikes has to be the luckiest / most blessed guy in South Texas.
But I am glad we got a new paper that supports or promotes fishing.
