That was a good read. Have you ever noticed that NOTHING in government can be done without more money, even though all of the folks doing the studies are already on government salaries or government grants?

I just sent this to pais_superintendent@nps.gov
| Quote: | Dear Sirs,
I am sending this note to fully endorse the views of Mr. Sikes in his recent article that can be found here:
http://www.caller.com/news/2010/jul/28/finding-a-good-speed-limit-at-padre-national/
Substantively, I have little to add to the subject and find continued erosion of user access to be undesirable. I am a part time resident of North Padre Island, and an active beach user. I purchased my home on the island in part because of access to the PINS. I emphasize that reduced access means reduced property values, particularly on the island, and a consequent erosion of the local government’s tax base, both of which having far reaching consequences.
I find further speed limit restrictions to be against the spirit of the national parks charter; our national parks such as PINS were established for the enjoyment of US citizens, not as an off limits wildlife refuge.
In balancing the needs of the community at large against the risks of turtle injuries, I have yet to have been presented data to support the move to further restrictions on user access. Please reconsider your recommendations on speed limit restrictions and fairly consider the option outlined by CAC: a year around 25 mph speed limit with mandatory 15 mph w/i 100 feet of turtles, parked cars, people.
Respectfully,
|

I did some light reading the other day. I got ahold of the PINS entrance numbers since inception, from 1966. Like any loser with a calculator, I came up with some interesting stuff.
so, you gotta drop the 1960's because the data is incomplete. or keep it, doesn't matter. I dropped it. so, I averaged every decade, just for fun.
1970's = 752,248
1980's = 651,848
1990's = 770,754
2000's = 650,406
so this past decade has seen the lowest average numbers of visitors since the park was created (FOR the visitors, by the way).
so it really makes me scratch my head when the Park is using the premise that they're wanting to reduce the speed limit to avoid FUTURE conflict with "beach resources."
what IS a "beach resource" anyway? methinks there's some wordsmithing going on here. especially when a government agency prepares its own EA/EIS. who reviews that?
anyhoo, the numbers are interesting. crunch them yourself from the website, they're available.
I'm starting to think that its not the HUMAN visitors the Park is expecting to increase, but the TURTLE visitors that will be the cause of the "future conflict."
the cards are laying on the table. make sure to turn in your comments.

It should also be noted that the article calls the turtle program an attempt to "restablish" a secondary nesting colony. This is not true. Yes some Kemp's Ridley turtles, along w/ other sea turtle species, have probably always nested on PINS, but never enough to have been called a nesting colony. Without the turtles on PINS, the worldwide population of Kemp's would not cease to exist. Everyone be sure to send your comments and like the article said, include CAC's option of 25mph w/ 15mph around camps and wildlife if you agree. _________________ "Ya'll must eat a lot of fish" |

So, we are going to agree to slow down to 15mph around campsites and wildlife in the park, and we don't even slow down that far for kids in a school zone. At the worst it should be 20mph around campsights and wildlife.
Once again government intrudes upon our rights, showing they care more about the wildlife and plants on PINS than the people it was intended for. |
