Very good inputs fellas. I think my game plan is get up early and fish around bird island then when it gets light start heading down there, if my passengers or I start feeling eerie then we will head back and try to go with a guide or so.

My next question is- is it worth it to go all the way down there to catch some fish? I know the fish surely dont jump in the boat and there are GREAT odds we dont catch that many, but for people that fish there- is there really that better of quality of fish?

Couldn't have said it better! I purchased maps, studied aerials and have had a grand adventure in Baffin this summer.

I've taken my little 16' panfisher a few miles offshore in some pretty rough conditions and also had it up on the white river running through rocky shoals after brown trout, and everything in between. Some people think I'm crazy, others think I'm stupid! It matters not a whit to me what others think because I'm having a good time (AND catching fish!!!) and I know how to handle a boat. Have I had a few close calls or torn up some props, etc? Sure, but I also learned a hell of a lot and have great experiences to remember and share. Wink

Folks who are afraid to risk a prop or get a dent or ding here and there (etc.) will never go to ALL of the fishy places that they wish to go. I have BIL who is a great guy and lots of fun to be around. For years he had a 22' high dollar deep V boat with a cuddy cabin, down in Destin. He always talked of going out to the deep water wrecks/reef/ledges that abound offshore from there. He never did. He just couldn't make himself get out of sight of land. Now he's been fighting cancer for 10 years and he's surely wishing that he HAD gone out there MANY times way back when he had the chance........................................................

The reason of my earlier post is that most folks have a GPS and with a current data base, they are very accurate. If you have one, and a chart, study them before you go to help learn the area. So that said...my first few times into Baffin, I had an aluminum rig, I think a chart and no GPS. I would ease into areas and really pay attention to boats running through to see how they navigate around. I'm sure most had a GPS and would save previous routes they knew to be safe. To me, learning the area is just as much fun as fishing. Good Luck, D.

Thanks for the luck it should be interesting. Where do some of yall fish down there? I heard the tide gauge bar, and then the shoreline on the southern part.

Im not asking for any specific markers and spots or anything, just the vacinity to catch em down there

Even the cheapest GPS is invaluable. When set on WAAS it has 10' accuracy with an open sky, as when on the water. It's easy as 1,2,3 to put it on track when leaving an area and just follow your track back out if you are wanting to do so. You can also save any track so that next time you go somewhere like Baffin you can safely follow it back into where you were. Could you still hit something only 10' one way or the other from your track? Surely so. You could also have a meteor land on you or get hit by lightning!!!!

The only way to learn Baffin,ULM and Land Cut is to go. Yep, your going to hit something and yep, your going to remember where you hit it and sometimes you'll even know what you hit.
Will a GPS help? Maybe or Not. I don't use one but then again I don't use anything but the knowledge I gained over the years.
Can you hit something using a GPS...Yep, but then again so can I and yes, 10ft can make all the difference in the world. Hell, there have been times I would swear the rock that was there yesterday just moved and I hit it today.
If you want to learn then go and learn. Sitting at home and won't get it done...you got boat insurance?...right.
If you don't go now it won't be long and our local open water won't be free or open anymore. There are special intrest groups out there today
trying to take the open water away from us. Seems they think they earned a closed to boat waters.

I would NEVER doubt or disagree with Mike and his fishing experience and skills. I would only add that 10' away on a WAAS enabled GPS IS 10' either way or twenty feet. The best navigator in the world with all the years of experience lining up two landmarks, on the water structures or other wise navigating is going to be hard pressed to get that close EVERY time just because of wind and current and the fact that we can't keep both objects in our view at the exact same time. That's one reason why bow hunting is so hard. Past 15-20 yards or so the human eye/brain are not all that keen at ACCURATE distance judgement, especially on the water.

Things always seem closer than they really are on the water. In the last few years of doing Race Committee Chairman duty at our local sailing club I've been using my GPS extensively to set starting lines, courses and such. By guessing at how far something is first and then checking that with the GPS I've become fairly good at guessing ranges under 200 yards on the water, and could have won A BUNCH of money when asking people how far they think that buoy is and then asking them if they want to bet!!!!! Cool

Even at that, once the on the water distance gets past 1/10 mile (528') it's still very hard to guess fairly accurately how far away something is. By "accurately", I'm talking 10s of feet or a few yards.

I have no doubt that Capt Mike is that accurate or better. BUT, for the rest of the non "years of experience crowd", a GPS in a REALLY nice piece of equipment!
