Took my father in law fishing today. Couldn't get offshore so went hopping around in the bay. Not too eventful-- one slot red, one keeper flounder and lots of rat reds. But... my FIL reels in this little fish and says "what the heck is this?" at first I thought it was a remora but I looked closer and it was a BABY LING!! This tells me that very good things are in out future as far as out fishery goes. Has anyone else caught one of these in the bay before? I've caught pomps and even heard of a small mahi but never a ling.

Man I was expecting something having to do with super hot women and pictures of same. Oh well, a baby ling is cool too. I guess.

Cool picture.

Shouldn't be too big of a surprise to have a baby ling in the bay, with all the Sargassum that has floated in. They love riding along with the abundant food source. And they grow just about as fast as any saltwater fish out there. A prime aquaculture candidate, given the tastiness of their flesh.

Now to catch one on rod and reel that small, that is a nice surprise.

If that's the best thing you have ever seen in the bay, you must not read the Saltwater Angler. Capt. Ron has had a few covers lately that are much more appealing. My guess is that his wife does not pick out the cover photo's. Very Happy

I have a buddy that has caught some 40"+ ling in the laguna on incoming tides on live shrimp.

Some of you may not agree but the bay is WAY cleaner than when I was a kid down there in the 60s. Back then the bay was ALWAYS the color of the Oso........................... now when I come down it is usually a nice shade of muddy green, sometimes even getting less muddy!

I caught one about 20" long in mid summer 2005 in a perch trap.

In David Sikes' article in the paper back in May, they caught one wade fishing!
