The thread about fresh water (rain) got me thinking: Years back while planning my trip to Destin I sent one of the tackle shops an e-mail and asked why they never caught speckled trout in the surf down there, ONLY in the bays and bayous. He told me that the gulf water was too salty, the trout couldn't take it!!!! Shocked I find that hard to believe when reading about how high the salinity can get in LM, Nueces Bay and other backwaters on the Tejas coast.

Any takers on this one? I'm all ears.................. Wink

I don't know anything about the effect it has on fish, but I just got back from Destin this past weekend and that WAS by far the saltiest water I have ever had in my mouth.

Yeah.................... ain't it great!!!!! Very Happy Down there you don't have to go 10-20 miles out to be in relatively deep water either, and BLUE!!!!! Shocked

I was fishing two+ miles out, SE of the pass on some old army tanks and catching red snapper, trigger fish, kings, etc. The water was about 68' deep. One puppy latched on and doubled my rod over......................... I was fishing just above the tanks and knew that if it got in there I'd loose it so I added a tad of thumb pressure to the spool and SNAP: 30 lb leader popped!!!!!!!!! Shocked Embarassed Rolling Eyes

Don't know for sure, but I wouldn't think the GOM in Destin would be any saltier than the GOM in Texas.

And you're right, the ULM is often more saline than the GOM so their reasoning is a bit shaky.

Somebody hurry up and head to the Land Cut and Baffin and run off all the trout that "can't take it" before they realize that the water there is too salty! Laughing

If you want some salty water, try swimming in (or rather bobbing in) 60 part per thousand water in the back of Baffin during a long hot spell some summer. The water is so salty that you almost can't underwater because of the dramatic increase in density. The fish, especially the trout, don't seem to mind too much.

With the salinity of Gulf water (about 32-35 parts per thousand, Destin or Texas, it doesn't matter) being about 1/2 of Baffin Bay is when it really gets up there, it's not a question of the saltiness as to why they don't catch trout in the surf there.

I think it also has to do with the differences in beach morphology and water clarity between the two places. no where to hide from predators and/or ambush prey.

either that or no one fishes for them effectively. after all, it IS an art Very Happy

It's a mystery to me. On the very rare occasions when the inshore gulf waters clear up down there (Texas), the trout fishing is often excellent in the surf, on the piers and on the jetties.

Maybe it has something to do with the fairly rapid drop in depth on the Florida panhandle. Speckled trout are for the most part a shallow water fish, shallow being relative of course. In Destin there is even less surf than in CC, if you can believe that, and the bars are much closer to shore because of the quicker drop in depth with distance from shore. So, maybe the fish can't find the bar/gut conditions that they seem to prefer when in the surf. Any thoughts on that one?

Trout are not restricted to the surf zone.

I realize that friend, they can go where they wish to. I said "inshore" and also "when in the surf".............. I said nothing about them being limited to the surf. The point is that SOMETHING in their habits keeps people from catching them anywhere but bays, estuaries, flats, passes and inshore waters: the last meaning from the surf zone to not too far offshore. Logic tells me that they aren't in places where they aren't caught and my simple query is why they would use the inshore waters in Texas and not in the Florida panhandle.

Main Entry: 1in·shore
Pronunciation: \ˈin-ˈshȯr\
Function: adjective
Date: 1701

1 : situated, living, or carried on near shore
2 : moving toward shore <an>

We'll I'd try to help you guys out but the last time I posted up about
what trout/redfish (fish) do in fresh water. The post was said to be turning into a WWF special so I deleted it... didn't want to get body slammed by
some of the future boat drivers.....
