| I have a 2004 2X Jeep Liberty (yup in retrospect that was a mistake), that I am probably going to trade in against a 4X4 Jeep. I looked at both new and used jeeps today. They are proud of the new ones, so most likely it will be a used one (2001-2005). I have never owned a 4X, so am not sure about prices, and things to look out for when buying used. Any advice would be helpful |

| make damn sure the transfer case and front end works and doesn't look all beat up other then that just look for your typical used vehicle stuff. you know kick the tires look for leaks listen for odd noises that kinda thing |

I own a 1997 Jeep Wrangler (4x4, of course). Jeeps are fun to own. However, be prepared to spend a few dollars every now and then. I've invested about $4k in repairs over the past 6 years. But honestly, most of that was putting after market stuff on instead of the cheap replacements. Buy a 6 cylinder as the 4s just don't cut the mustard. You'll appreciate the power and torque you can get from it. Plus, the engine will run forever if it is a 2001 or earlier model. They switched engines after that.
Some common problems you may encounter:
1) exhaust leak right after the manifold. Look for small cracks in or right before/after the "Y".
2) If it has a Dana 35 axle, make sure to check the lubricant for any signs of metal flakes. Easy to do, just stick your pinky finger in and take a look at what shows up. Dana 35s are a weak axel and can take heavy ware if driven hard frequently.
With all that said, I'll never get rid of my Jeep. Love it. Fun to drive, awesome off road vehicle. Does good on the beach (so far anyways). Great in mud and snow. Easy to work on. The soft tops are a blast. Plus, they are tough as nails. Been hit once or twice and barely have anything to show.

| Have a "96 Wrangler softtop and It's been a good ride had it about 2 years now. It is the 4 cylinder if I had to do it again I would go for the 6. As stated above be prepared for some repairs every now an then but usually they are not too expensive as the Wranglers are easy to work on. Had the front drive shaft rebuilt on it just last week (it went out with no warning) but it was still driveable in 2 wheel (of course) while that was being done. I live in Central TX but got the jeep mainly for the beach (2 wheel drive Dodge diesel pickups don't do well in soft sand) but we use it to run around town constantly. It's a lot easier to park than a big PU particularly on a crowded weekend in Port A. Best $250 I ever spent was for the towbar to pull it behind the truck on trips to the coast etc.. The Dodge does not even know it's there and it only makes a small difference in mileage. Takes only about 10 min to hook or unhook to the truck. |

I have a 2001 with the I6 4x4. Look for the 2001 or newer as was posted, the manifold issue was fixed from 01 forward I am told. 100K miles on mine and no manifold leaks.
Look for the D44 rear axle. If it has 3.73 almost sure it is a D44, the D35 is know for breaking axles, not enough spline on the axles. If it has the plastic radiator don't buy an OEM type, upgrade to an all metal, copper brass type for about $170.
The 3.07 gears will not get it done in the sand, not enough torque when needed.
Change all fluids to amsiol especially your axles and transfer case or some other high end fluid, money well invested. Same for the motor oil.
Get a high lift jack, if not lifted and you don't want the expense put in a 2" spacer lift, will be able to run 31 inch tires without a problem. Go to pepboys and get a cyclone compressor for about $35, will air up your 31s from 10 to 35 in about 3mts. Great on the beach when you need to change air pressure.
Enjoy your TJ they are a blast, will always have a Jeep.
