Hello everyone!

My name is Shannon (im a guy.. i know its a girls name) and I am moving to Padre Island courtesy of the USCG. I have been trolling this website for several months and gettting more stoked by the day. I should be moving into my new house on Coralvine in about a month and a half. I was hoping to get some help with some questions and try to sell myself to make some friends and learn a bit more "hands on". I grew up surf and pier fishing on the outter banks of NC so i am not a noob to fishing but i have been out of the game for a little while and please forgive my questions if they seem dumb? I am gearing up from scratch since my family back home has it all.

1- I noticed none of the guides really talk about using braid? When I fished in Sitka AK i swore by the stuff because it seemed to hold up better when bouncing off rocks. Do any of you reccomend it for shark fishing?

2- How do you know you are out past the third bar on calm days? Im guessing its pretty obvious but is there a "trick" to know when you are out far enough if it isnt?

3- Are there any bait houses or places you reccomend to get fresh large baits?

I have read "the shark fishing handbook" several times. Does anyone have another link to some info i could study or any buying suggestions for gear?

first off welcome aboard and thanks for your service!!!!!
I use braid on a lot of my reels and it works great surf, bay, and offshore. For as the bars if the water is calm and clear you can some time see them. if not just watch the waves as they brake you can get a fill for the bars location. There are a lot of guys that are better with words than I on this board and I'm sure someone will give a good inside on this You can check out in port A at the docks and get some jacks sometimes. You can all so check out Extreme coast lot of great info on there as well.

Welcome! Thanks also for your service. My son is in the Navy and we have quite a few service folks registered on the board. Like Critter Getter says on the braid, I use it on most of my reels. I don't target sharks in particular, but sure like catching Blacktips with my friend Rob. Kayaking bait works out great but I will sling a live pony mullet out on my Shimano Trevala 5'6" heavy spinner dumped into the first gut. I have 100lb braid on that Fin Noor reel and use it with a 250lb shark leader. I do use mono on the long distance casting rigs, that we use to catch jacks, bull reds, blacktips etc. Around here in the surf we don't use the 8 and bait bouncing rigs they do at the Point in N.C. We use more spider weights and try to leave our rigs in one spot. The tides are very small here so we don't get the dramatic surf action you have on the OBX.

Thanks for the info guys. Im stuck at work for the next 24 hours so i have nothing better to do but troll boards and drooooooool over gear on bass pro shops and compare prices (that is unless the SAR alarm goes off).

Anyway shawn, ill be filling an AST2 Billet and this will be my fouth Airstation (Sitka, E-City, Nola and now corpus). I cant even begin to explain how excited i am to be at a beach again.

Ladyfish - I plan on spending alot of time on BHP since my house is less than 1/4 mile away and i will definately look you up to pick your brain!

For what it's worth, I've got a TON of beach gear sitting in storage in San Antonio due to the fact that the good ol' USCG land-locked me up here in KY. If you need to use anything, let me know. I'll glady trade some 'gear rental' for a few tips on AST training.

1 I use braid, but I'm not one of the long casting afficianados(it's the line of choice).
2 If it's calm enough for there not to be breakers, you can see the sand bars.
3 Get the numbers to all the bait stands from these guys. Some have different stuff at different times.

Take it from an old retired Navy Guy, you need to visit Breakaway Tackle at 2301 Rodd Field rd, Unit B2, Corpus Christi and talk to Nick Meyer about tackle BEFORE YOU BUY ANYTHING. I would buy their combo pack of videos to learn about PINS (Padre Island Nat'l Seashore). Breakaway tackle is the best long casting tackle going - bar none. Their website is www.BreakawayUSA.com .

BTW, go here for a local Breakaway rod being sold on CraigsList. Its a casting rod and a great deal if you don't need a spinning rod setup.
