Taking my 8' Sportsman out for a try Friday morning. The best advice the installer could give me was not to take off with it still deployed. Which makes good sense to this Bluffer.

What is a safe speed to deploy? 3 Knots, 5 Knots?

as fast as your boat could possibly drift.. Don't do it under power..

Hold the button down a bit even after you think its as far as it will go down.. if you are drifting to fast and it tweaks at a funny angle and doesn't get in far enough simply raise it quickly then drop it back down right away as you wont be going nearly as fast.

If I'm still drifting, I'll apply thrust in the opposite direction to bring the boat to as close to a standstill as possible. I try to put as little stress as possible on the transom mount.

Good luck,

If it's coverd in mud don't try to wipe it off with your hand. I did this a while back and had fiberglass in my hand for a week. I know it was stupid, but after I told my buddy he didn't belived me and tried it on his. Trust me it makes it tough to fish with a hand full of fiberglass.

the new ones are much better than the older poles.. I did the same in the old one and it hurt. It seems the new pole has a better epoxy finish on it and wont splinter fiberglass..

The slower the better. Make sure you check the bolts on the cylinder after each trip. I have broke three at different times. All have broke off at the threads. I replaced them with one size larger.

I know this sounds crazy, but I've seen boats with 2 of them on the transom. That's an awesome idea. It would be nice to set them down so that the wind is coming from one side of the boat. When you put one pole down, the boat lines up with the wind and only the person(s) standing on the deck have a good cast, providing that you want to cast with the wind.

I did the same "slide the hand up the spike" and quickly found out that it is full of splinters. It's good that they have one that's smooth now.

There was a thread a while back where a guy said that he retracted it to take off and when he brought it up, there was a Flounder on it! If I remember correctly, he said that he didn't get to it quickly enough and the fish got away. I wonder if that's a legal way to get Flounder? JK

I hope you got the new type of green fluid. I replaced the fluid in mine after a leak. I somehow cut the little blue line and it sprang a leak. They have new hydraulic fluid now that biodegradable. All of the new ones come with it standard.

The thing has allot of power. Respect that.

Coach. Did I miss a post?

Everyone, thanks for the input and advice. I was down at the boat show and the man halfway down the t-head selling this device agreed with minimizing the stress on the transom.

I am not the most experianced in this area but I'll tell you that you want to be going as slow as possible and make sure you stick it solid.

it's kinda wierd to see that damn thing twist and flex, I don't know how much of that it can stand before it gives up.

My boat typically drifts sideways and it doesn't stop easy, the 8' PP has a lot of leverage.

Best advice I can give you is do not trust it. I have wade fished away from a boat that had one and the bolts broke and away went the boat. It was a great learning experience so one day when the wind was blowing stiff like it usually does I just for the heck of it threw the anchor on my boat and it was a good thing because when I got back the anchor was holding the boat. Lesson learn, unless it is calm do not use it as an anchor. They are great additions if you drift and want to set up quickly on a spot. If two or less are fishing off the boat they are fine for stopping and fishing but with three or more it gets too crowded in the bow. I always set it down, let the boat straighten then reset to take out twist. Also keep an eye out for hydraulic leaks...I had one and it affects holding big time. Another nice use is in combo with an anchor you can keep the boat from swinging.
