Just curious what y'all think. They seem to be popular in different areas along the gulf to deal with all the wind chop and confused, short period seas we have here.
Been looking at used Worldcats as an alternative to a deep V monohull (I like the Cape Horns).
Was reading on another board that a lot of offshore guides out of Venice LA have gone to cats. Surprised I don't see more on the water around here.
Thanks. _________________ Jeff

Jeff, I would think that the guides use them due to they have a lot of fishing room. I once sold the Prokat and the thing that I did not like about them, besides that they are very low in quality, was that every time you hit a wave you hit it twice..... That could have just been the Prokat. If you are going to buy the cat hull there is only one if you ask me.....Worldcat! I never fished or spent more than an hour or two tops at one time, but thats my opinion. That being said, If you are interested in a Cape Horn give me a call I've got a few out there for you to view. I do have a used one at the store right now. I also have a 34 Yellowfin that is scheduled to be here in April, $232,000.........ouch.

232k is a bit steep. . . . I don't think my wife would let me buy a boat that cost more than our house. LOL.
Worldcat would definitely be at the top of the list for cats. You would still steer toward a deep v monohull? _________________ Jeff

| I have only been in one CAT Glacier Bay and I was not personally impressed. I got soaking wet. It was bad enough the waves got us from the port or starboard and even worse every other wave the boat spit water out the bow as well!!!! They are supposedly smooth running with a head sea. Just my .02 cents. I am sure their are more experienced CAT runners on this board. |

gunbuyer, was the captain experienced with cats hulls? I ask b/c bumping around worldcat forums they all preach 'trim, then trim up some more'. Apparently you gotta trim the bejesus out of them to get them to not dig in and 'catwalk' and other funky handling traits. _________________ Jeff

A friend of mine has a 27 foot World Cat that I have made a number of trips on out to 50 miles offshore. I have never been on a better riding boat in the gulf and this one gives a dry ride as well. What impressed me the most was running in 3 to 5 seas with a time space of 6 seconds. Every other boat I have drove or rode on would give you a good jar comming off those "pyramid" waves but the cat comes down soft and easy. There is some "spit" off the bow, but only enough to screw up your glasses every now and then. The only down side is getting use to steering a cat. It does not respond like a conventional hull design. It turns flat, unlike leaning into the turn. _________________ Off Shore Port Mansfield |

That's really quite helpful, thanks. The 27 CC is the boat I'm most interested in b/c I can put it on my lift and not have to rearrange stuff at my dock. And the prices are not too bad as the current 27 has been around for a while.
3-5's with a 6 sec period. . . that's pretty impressive to not be beat up. I think most Deep Vs while perhaps not pounding, would be a fair bit more uncomfortable. Some people describe that our 4' waves have no 'backside' hence the pounding by most boats.
Cat steering. . . yeah pretty funky from what I've read (never been on one). Tell your friend about this:

| We were trolling so the trim proabably wasnt the issue. It was probably 3-5 ft mybe 4-6 ft. It was also windy which probably didnt help. |

Jeff lets run up to venice and book a charter to try one out. You can count me in for 1/4th of the $$ If its a yellowfin charter that is.. Other than that my capt buddy his brother in law runs a high 20 foot cat but I am not 100% sure if it was a glacier bay or a WC.. |
