If the CC Chamber of Commerce doesn't like the charter amendment, why doesn't the C-O-C run its own petition drive? Then we can have dueling referenda. Laughing

Chamber endorses vehicle ban, opposes related charter amendment
By Nick Nelson/Caller-Times
March 27, 2006

The Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce board today formally opposed a proposed charter amendment the City Council is considering that the board says would stifle growth on Padre and Mustang islands.

The council is planning to vote Tuesday on an ordinance that would ban vehicle traffic on 7,200 feet of beach on Padre Island. The ordinance also proposes a charter amendment that would require any future restrictions to be approved with a citywide vote — not just b y the City Council as they are now.

The chamber board supports the 7,200 -foot traffic restriction, but Chamber President Terry Carter said the charter amendment would be a "severe impediment to future growth and development of our city."

The City Council, which voted 7-1 last week to approve the ordinance, including the proposed charter amendment, will vote Tuesday on a second and final reading of the ordinance.

Yep, the chamber wants to close off all the beaches. If they are oppossed, there is a reason, which is likely they have developers lined up to come in behind Schexy and Intrawest, with promised of closed beaches.

Its no coincidence that the planning documents for Padre list beach access roads every 1/2 mile, which just happens to be what TOBA requires as the maximum distance between parking lots to close beaches.

If the Chamber has all this planned out, which likely they do, then there is a good chance that someone on the city counsil knows alot more than they are willing to say about future development. Also why they would put forth a weak city charter amendment that can easily be defeated.

We are strating to uncover a very tangled web, and now the question lies of who exactly has been weaving it and for how long?

Just saw the C-O-C position portayed via an interview w/ its head honcho on the tube. I agree it sure looks like someone has other rounds in the same gun. Should be interesting to see if the City Council tries tomorrow to accomodate the C-O-C and the as-yet-unidentified developments by dropping the charter amendment from the ordinance, or whether they'll do as the City Manager mentioned on the air and split the beach closure and the amendment into two separate ordinances.

Another newsclip on CH. 3 was of a proposal by beach closure supporters to troup along a certain distance on downtown streets together as a surrogate for that stretch between the seawall and Packery Channel. Someone from the news studio needs to catch them on the street and ask why they don't wait until the weekend and can take the kids and Grannie to trek the real beach with real fishing paraphenalia. Would look like a scene from "Lawrence of Arabia" w/o the camels. Laughing
