I was wanting to get into rod building and was looking to buy a book to help me get started. Looking at building some shark rods as well as some smaller rods for throwing lures. Does anyone have any suggestions for a good starter book to buy? _________________ "If I'm going down, I'm going down in flames" |

I'm in the same boat. I know how to wrap guides, but some of the stuff that the "Tamers" do I'm in awe over. I'd love to take a class or something. Very cool artform. Hopefully someone could give us some advice. |

Rodbuilding.org is a good place to start. I have been looking at that site for a while while trying to decide if I want to start wrapping some rods myself. _________________ May the holes in your net be no larger than the fish in it. ~Irish Blessing |

Get the book by Tom Kirkman. There are some others by Dale Clemens, but some of the information is outdated.
For decorative wraps, you should try and get a copy of Custom Rod Thread Art (Dale Clemens). It is currently out of print but some copies still appear on Ebay.

What was said before is pretty much all you need to get started. My wife and I have the Book by Tom Kirkman and a book called Advanced custom rod building by Dale Clemens, also www.Rodbuilding.org is an excellent resource. You can get help from some of the best rod builders around. Also thanks for the props you gave my wife and I it is much appreciated. If this helps we have been doing this for about a year.

| The nail was pretty much hit on the head. No need for me to repeat what was said. But like Tarpon_Tamer, I wanted to say thank you for the kind words about our work. We both have found something we really love doing. Only he was fortunate enough to learn from the mistakes I made, cuz I jumped in feet first. rodbuilding.org is an awesome site. All the builders on there are SO knowledgeable, and if you have ANY questions they are quick to respond. If you find out anything about a class, please let us know. I was trying to see about taking one when I first got the notion to do this, then got bit by the bug....HARD! Good luck to you and happy building! Let us know how it goes. |

Shawn,
I use a Flex Coat hand rod wrapper and 18rpm drying motor. You can order them from several on-line websites. Roy's in Corpus used to sell them too. |

There used to be a place in Austin where they had all the stuff to wrap rods. They had classes and plenty of wrapping stations. Folks would stop by and work on their rod when ever they wanted. You just left your work-in-progress there. That business moved to San Antonio back in the early 90s. I think it is still open there but I do not know if they still have the rod building setup. I think it was named Rodbuilders.
I learned to wrap rods in 1971 when I was in jr high. I haven't wrapped since then and I have been thinking about doing it again. It is surprising how easy it really is to do diamond wraps and such. It just takes time. And now with companies like Flexcoat, it is even easier to get the tools and components to build your own rods. |

You ought to get back in it GC! You can do pink diamond wraps. Imagine how good that would look with a pair of matching pink crocs! |

| Dennis Freeman was/is the guy in San Antonio. He recently closed his shop on Blanco Rd. called Rodbuilders, but, is still operating out of his home I think. |
