They may be great boat reels but for the surf they don't cast as far as a lot of other reels due to their spool design.

Tyler; I'm gearing up for when my son is old enough to enjoy some fishing with me(he's currently only 2yo). I purchased a Diawa SeaLine 50 SHA at Bass Pro Shop after doing a little looking and research. I believe the SeaLine will cast well(floating spool) and also work as a trolling reel - but I've never used/owned an open-face/casting reel. I'm hoping to take my son to PINS someday with 3-4 surf rods/reels. What are your thoughts on the Diawa SeaLine? BTW: I haven't bought a rod for it yet - so your thoughts on that would also be appreciated. Thanks.

I've got the 40 sealine and it is a good reel though you might need to add more brakes to it. I think I added 7000 Abu brakes to mine because it is really fast. The 50 is just a bit wider so it might be a little more difficult to cast I am sure someone else who owns one can chime in. I used my 40 loaded with a top shot of powerpro and caught a 70lb yellowfin with it offshore. I think the 40 could catch most sharks under 6.5 feet if you are casting your baits.

I have a sealine 20 that use for surfcasting, and I love the thing. I put it on a 10-6

I highly recommend the reel
