Hi all, hope everyone's well. Just found this site!
I have family in CC and planning a trip to visit them this weekend. I figured it would be a good opportunity to expand my horizons while I'm there. Therefore I'm hauling my rig from near Houston.
I've never fished Upper Laguna Madre and I'm excited on venturing out to that area. I know little about the area, nevertheless, reading your posts, checking out areal maps and considering I'll be staying off of SPID. I figured Bird Island Basin Area is just as good as any to start, especially considering there is a boat ramp there.
The boat ramp seems to be remote, my question is, will my truck and trailer be safe there?
Also, I plan on fishing north of the Bird Island ramp since I've always heard Baffin is very dangerous (rocks) for folks that aren't familiar with the area. If I do venture south of the Basin how far could I safely run my boat, considering I have no clue?
TIA |

| If you're not going to fish the Baffin area, I would put in at marker 37. Lots of horror stories about parking at Bird Island. There's good fishing from there south to pure oil channel. Lots of guides are working the Pita Island area as well as the King Ranch Shoreline and humble channel. |

Bird Island parking area has been hit several times recently by thieves, don't leave anything you want to keep in your truck.
Baffin is not dangerous, there are areas that you could find rocks, but then you could find pipe, stumps and all sorts of things in the water just about anywhere.
There are boat ramps much closer to SPID, less likely to have your truck broken into, how far south you can go depends on you and your boat, how far can you travel safely on a tank of fuel? do your have a backup tank (6 gal portable), Baffin does get rough pretty quick if the wind picks up, south of baffin in the land cut usually produces as does Baffin, but then if you are a fish hound you can find them all up and down the ULM.
Good Luck, leave some fish for me!!! |

I very much appreciate this information. I located Marker 37 boat ramp, that should work well. Hopefully, I'll be able to provide a good fishing report. I have a 36 gallon tank, however I'd be doing good getting 2 to 2.5 mpg, that's why I was contemplating putting in a Bird Island. Knowing what I know now, I'm going to play it safe by putting in and hanging out around northern ULM, until I get better familiar with the area.
Thanks again... |

Trying to get the guy to ding up his boat or what? Please don't tell people this.. It isn't accurate. It is a very wise idea to go to Baffin with someone who knows what they are doing for a while..I've seen plenty of noobs tear up a boat running where they shouldn't! Same goes for Nueces Bay. If you don't know where you are going back there, its very easy to screw up. |

I was thinking the same thing. The guy wants to have a good time, not knock off his lower unit. _________________ "Ya'll must eat a lot of fish" |

Everyone be careful out there. I got broken into out there in October. The thefts started again this weekend. I saw a ranger looking at cars in the parking lot. He said that Friday night they had 7 break ins that he had found so far.

Now I will agree with you on the Nueces Bay!
But I should be ashamed of myself for encouging someone to venture into Sherwood Forest (Baffin Bay), It's haunted! people who go there never return!
Any boater with a brain should know enough to trek slowly in unfamilure territory.
I have fished Baffin for about 30 years and have not once hit anything, now I am not saying people have not hit rocks and junk but then I have hit stuff in the boat hole, the crash channel, hell once upon a time I even found the old JFK wooden pilings when the tide was up.
You guys are scaring people. |

| While it is true if you approach carefully you might not actually lose your lower unit but it won't keep you from taking a hit. When the water is chocolate the rocks are as good as hidden below the surface. If you don't know the area, don't go without an experienced person from Baffin. It's not meant to scare people it is a fact. Many first timers have lost boat parts in those waters, lol. The graveyard got its name by earning it. One experienced guide once told me the best thing to do is go during an extreme low tide and gps rocks that you wouldn't otherwise see. I'm telling you if you do you'll definately see structures you didn't realize were even there, just below the surface. |

Ha! The worst one's I've seen are those guys who think "trekking slowly" works means tooling along barely on plane. With the bow up high, that lower unit down as deep as it will go, they run right across the rocks! No good!

There is a big difference there! 30 years or never... I can just picture this guy coming down from Corpus, and hanging a right across the Badlands! If you have never been there, how would you know? Doh! |

i'm with cuda... baffin is/can be bad, but common sense goes along way on the water. there are spots in baffin that are worse than others, but a map will tell you where those are. study a map of the bay, stay in the channel until you reach your desired spot and ease into it. if people don't have sense enough to be aware of their surroundings while on the water, they probably shouldn't be operating a boat in the first place. _________________ 'one does not know what is beneath the surface...' | There is a big difference between drifting the rivera channel and fishing Baffin. Not recommended. You can get yourself into trouble down there real quick. Just my opinion. |

First, I think some people need to re-read my first response, Second, the rediculous scenario of running slow with your bow up and the engine down in the water as mentioned might have happened and the person doing this probably deserves what ever happened, Third, Why do you insist on lumping this guy into the group of boobs that would run blindly into an area without common sense and care. Hey! he might have a boat like mine, you know, scratches on the bottom from drifting over oysters and such.
My first trip to baffin many years ago did not produce a ding in my boat or knock my lower unit off. As a Matter of Fact, I hit nothing and had a wonderful time limiting out on monster trout.
Seriously! stop scaring people, I did not tell anyone to run blindly into baffin, Here let me help you warn this guy about Baffin:
Be careful if you go to Baffin! there are Rocks!!!!!!!
Here is an idea! sense some of you are concerned for this guys safety, why don't you post up the areas of great danger, go ahead, include the coordinates while your at it. |

Well spoken man, and my feelings exactly! Nobody ever takes their boat to someplace new until the first time they go!!!!!
You can't fix stupid, so people should stop trying! As the poster and others have said, there are great maps and charts, GPS and Google earth but you can't MAKE anyone use any of the above, you can't legislate common sense and it's not up to any one of us to see to it that takes place!!!
If those boaters who had no earthly idea of navigation and right of way rules, no good boat handling skills or were always drunk when on the water stopped boating, it WOULD be a beautiful experience! Just as with driving though, at least 50% of those doing so have no darn business behind the wheel of a yard tractor, let alone a car or tuck, but they have the money and a license!!! With boats, you don't even need the license and to many, boating without consuming mass quantities of alcohol is heresy!!!!!
It's the world we live in, people are supposed to be adults and look out for their own best interest. _________________ Dave

lol @ trusting the maps or giving "rock" coordinates in Baffin! As if they are all charted or something. Its a free country, but if you have a brain, please don't run down there without taking someone with experience for the first few trips. I've been out there since I was knee high to a grasshopper and I have seen lots of "boobs" as you say who are out there for the first time tear up their boats! If you run out there without experience or an experienced person on board, you are without common sense and care. Just trying to help the guy out! |
