| I am planning to go to Mustang Island this summer to fish for whiting in the surf. The plan is to camp on the beach for maybe 3 days and 2 nights. If any fish are actually caught they will immediately go into a ice chest with frozen water jugs. How long will these fish be okay before I fillet them? Do I need to fillet each days catch, each night? or fillet all of them before we leave to go home? Surely they cannot wait until we get home.( 3.5 hours) That could possibly be a total of 2.5 - 3 days in the ice chest before being cleaned. Thanks for any info |

You could gut and gill them. They'll keep a good while like that.
Im not sure about transporting unidentifiable fillets off the beach.

If you want to keep them on ice that long, you will need to gut and gill the fish. Personally though I would go ahead and filet them and put the meat in baggies. Just be sure and check the regs on fish possession. A game warden would not know if your filets are whiting or some other type of fish. Have fun.

gill em while they are still kicking to bleed them out, gut them, cover generously with ice, and pull the plug on the cooler so the fish don't sit in pooling water. You'll be fine for several days.
Grigar talked about week long fishing trips in which he'd use block ice to keep the fish fresh, by chipping the ice so he could cover the fish adequately. I think someone mentioned on here covering layers of fish/ice with newspaper and sawdust to cut down on melting of the ice when opening the cooler.

sure..we used to use stringers in the surf all the time. just use a piece of pvc and suck it down in the sand in the shallow water right off the shore and tie your stringer around that.
