Well, I wish I was writing this report due to my success on the pier last night but unfortunately, that's not the case. I went down to the Cos-way pier last night but saw the flags waving towards the pier so decided to go to the Red Dot instead. The pier was packed. I walked down to the far end of the pier over the arch and decided to set up shop there. As soon as I got there and wet my line there was a man next to me that had a good run on his rod. Poor guy didn't set the hook and the fish dropped the bait. About 15 min. later, I see a couple of guys hootin and hollerin across the way and I see them pull up a nice drum. No sooner than they release that one, a guy next to me has a run on his rod. Fights it for a few minutes and hauls that thing in like it's nothing. Must've been using some heavy duty line. Measured it out and it went 38". They said that just before I got there he had landed a 40.5" drum also. Looks like they were all using sea lice. Didn't have the proper weights that night as it was a quick trip for me and the current was dragging my weight around like it wasn't even there. Saw what I needed to get my fix on the big uglies and decided to head home to rest up for a good fishing session on Sunday. I'll keep you guys posted on how I do.

Man, just using better quality hooks and/or checking/sharpening them would have had that first guy into a good fish, hook set or not.

What size hooks do you recommend for them Big Ugleez,? I have not been out much, but the last time My kids hooked up with some big ones across from the Ingleside Base and they had a blast. Do they hit on chunked crab as well, or is Sea lice the best ?

Found a pocket knife with a hook sharpener on it at REI $5.00. That salt water will eat the point off a hook in a few hours. L

I have caught huge drum on a number 3 treble but currently use nothing but Owner 03-04 circle hooks for everything from drum to bull reds. Drums are nibblers and I think they somethimes take their time getting their mouths around the bait. I have recently caught some big drum on little pieces of peeled shrimp(half of a regular size shrimp; larger cut into thirds). Can speak to Corpus but in AP area you can usally get sea lice at Fin and Feathers off 361 as well as at Port A Outfitters in Port A.

I feel your pain! Same thing happened to me last year. Some bad expierences at the cos-way. I hooked up real good on some big uglies and nice size reds last Feb. some bad line and unusual suspects there. Maybe this year i'll get it right Cool . My hooks where good my line was bad it kept breaking off(no not to much drag) it was house line from a place I won't mention real cheap stuff. I usually do it myself but I was in a hurry and it was free with the reel purchase.
