Hey all. I've been following the threads concerning the RED TIDE. Seems that most are hoping the rain (lots of it per the weather report) and the cold front will take care of it. That's good news.

My 1st question is, should the rain and cooler temps do the job this week, what type of fishing can I expect this coming weekend? Not knowing much on the subject, I would speculate that it would take quite awhile for the fishing to recover. Mabye a month?

Would we be ok fishing down in the 30s and 40s mm?

Second question is concerning driving conditions... if it does rain per the forcast, what will driving on the beach be like, especially that far down.

I really appreciate this site. Ton of info and advice. It is nice to be able to read what the locals are seeing on the beach. Keep up the good work. Thanks to all.

I don't know what the weather will do as far as red tide, but all the rain is packing down the beach so driving should be great.

Unless something changes, the movement will probably continue down that far as it went from the 20s to the 35 mm in a couple of days. Even if it is gone by then I hope you like the smell of dead fish because the wind blowing off the water onto the beach will make sure you smell it. My car still smells like dead fish from driving on them which I don't recommend. This morning ther were flys sworming around my beach vehicle after spending a lot of money at the car wash and even laying on my back to wash underneath. When we drove out yesterday there were many bull reds still washing up around the 10mm so the effects are still being seen days after it past that area. I know I'm not going back out there next weekend and I'm not saying don't come down but be prepared for the worse if you want to stay on PINS. DO NOT DRIVE ON THE DEAD FISH UNLESS YOU HAVE TRACKS INSTEAD OF TIRES Laughing

Aaron Drawhorn on Channel 6 said Red Bulls were washing up on shore. As expensive as those things are, I thought I'd go fill up my ice chest. Laughing

Thanks for the replies. Awful sad to see all those dead fish. Hope the fishing recovers quick.

Well, here we are, coolers, kayaks, generator, lights, throw net, and rods. All dressed up and no where to go. We've been talking about heading to Galveston to fish. Figure we'll make the decision Thursday.

This would be my 2nd trip to PINS and my buddy's 1st.

just returned from the point to see red tide up to about 38 mm. driving conditions worst I've ever seen with water to the dunes and a river running underneath the turtle station. Ended up with 8 flat tires (4 ruined) between 3 trucks. The drive was to take 6 hours just to pavement. Like reported hundreds of bull reds, trout, jack crevelle, red snapper, bonita, smacks and of course mullet, whiting, pomps, and one shark. Got broncitis from the red tide and caught very few fish.

Not good news at Gorda either. We relocated our Fall PINS trip (scheduled 2 months in advance) to Matagorda at the last minute last weekend and from Thursday to Sunday it went from bad to worse to worser to impossible. Water chocolate brown with a north to south current ripping down the beach. Surf was to the dunes by Sunday. Fortunately we had moved from the surf to the mouth of the river Saturday afternoon and then from the mouth to the pier parking lot Saturday evening when the rains hit. Timing on high tides is similar to those at Port A, and if you look at the chart linked on this site, you'll see that even with waves decreasing by Saturday this week, there won't be much beach at high tide. Sad

We relocated our trip this past weeked to Boliver Pennisula. I had never fished there before but the guy I was with had. So, we set off about 0500 Saturday morning. After fixing one flat on the trailor and a traffic stopping downpour in Houston, we finally hit the beach around 1100. Suffering through more rain, we finally hit some fish.

All in all the trip yielded two bull reds (neither of which I caught ), several hardheads, and a flounder.

A bad day fishing is still better than a good day at work.

From the pictures I was not able to tell where you were.

In the early 60's, during the summer, my back yard was the beach from the old fort (now a state park) to the north jetties.

My Grandfather had a cabin on the second road from the beach. I don't know if I could find it now.

What a way to spend the summer

Saltydog - we were about 27 miles from the ferry landing, just south of High Island.

That would be a nice summer. Hitting the beach whenever you wanted...
